The town has also experienced growth in retail development including several large local stores (Hershey’s), including two Target stores that opened in 2018 adjacent to each other; one open until 10 p.m., the other open until 7 p.m.; two Wal-Marts; two major fast food restaurants ( Subway and Taco Bell); one Pizza Hut; one KFC restaurant; three hair salons; four wig shops; six convenience stores (CVS Pharmacy, Safeway Supermarket/Grocery Store #1 & 2, Circle K FoodMart) plus five liquor stores (Albertson’s supermarket #1 & 2). This growth has led to increased crime rates in the area due to drugs being shipped into or used within the town from north county areas such as Garden Grove or Irvine Ranch which have larger populations and are more likely to have security checkpoints

In 1863, Don Pedro Cargill leased Rancho El Centinela from José Joaquín Mora for grazing land that he intended to subdivide into townships for himself and his family. In 1865–1866 an act of Congress created Yosemite National Park within Yosemite County and provided for its management by the United States government with funds raised through taxation on land within its boundaries. The park is administered today by the National Park Service Bakerfield was one of four Californian towns incorporated on February 21st 1850 pursuant to an Act of Assembly approved January 10th, 1850 which granted voting rights to citizens over 17 years old who resided in those portions included within metropolitan areas designated as “Fresno” or “Bakersfield” – now known as Sacramento and Imperial counties respectively - subject only to property qualifications; voting privileges were withheld from aliens ineligible under state law at that time (ejectable free persons). This act represented a major milestone in American democracy and came five years after Mexico had ceded most of southern California following their defeat at Buena Vista in 1848; thus Mexicans living east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains were effectively disenfranchised at that point in U.S.– Mexican relations." Bakerfield saw steady growth throughout its early days but experienced some setbacks throughout Reconstruction period due primarily to race riots between whites and African Americans which targeted businesses owned or managed by white people across townspeople. These protests eventually led Governor Hiram Johnson order federal troops into town on October 15th 1870 when white supremacists stormed a black market storefront resulting in two dead civiliansand extensive damage inflicted upon several businesses before being dispersed by federal forces without further incident
The area now known as Woodland was first settled in the late 1800s by ranchers and farmers. The land was used for agriculture, forestry, and grazing until the early 1900s when it was purchased by the city of Los Angeles. The city began to develop the area and built a number of residential and commercial properties. In 1907, Woodland became one of the first cities in California to be incorporated.
