Woodland, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and bordered by Bakersfield to the east and Tulare County to the west. The name comes from an old Spanish name for this area - "Huell's Forest". The first Europeans to visit here were Juan Manuel de la Hoz and his party in 1769. In 1815, General Antonio Vallejo founded Stockton on this site as part of his plan to connect San Francisco with Los Angeles through the Central Valley. A year later, he named it after President James K. Polk's brother-in-law William Woodland (1802-1893). In 1847, many people who had come overland from Oregon started farming here under contract from Governor Mission Dolores Castro. They called their land Rancho Californio because they wanted it to be clearcut so that they could see how much timber there was available for sale. By 1850, more than 10 miles of forest had been cleared and about 150 buildings had been built across five blocks in what is now downtown Woodland (then known as North Main Street). Not until 1862 did lumber ownership change hands when John Cranch bought 50 acres of Rancho Californiano from Mission Dolores Castro for $5 per acre ($60 million today). At that time woodchipping began taking place off Highway 99 near present day Rancheria Heights in neighboring Kern County; it would become one of the most important industries in Woodland during its early years. Today much of what once made up Rancho Californiano are gone but some remains including a white house that was used as a military hospital during World War II, three churches and a mill complex dating back to the 1870s still stand today in downtown Woodland

Woodland, California was founded in 1868 by Captain John C. Fremont and his men on the Rancho Seco. The town was named after a broad, flat tract of land that lay to the east of downtown Los Angeles. The first settler in Woodland was James Hutton, who built a small cabin on the west side of what is now Main Street. By 1869, farmers had begun to arrive in Woodland and started to grow crops. In 1870, Captain Fremont organized a group of settlers and began leasing land from the Mexican government for development into a town. The first buildings were erected in 1871, including the courthouse and jail. The town gradually grew as it became known for its fertile soil, clean air, and good fishing spots. By 1915, Woodland had a population of around 120 people and several businesses had been established including a post office and bank. In 1916-1917, World War I caused an increase in traffic through Los Angeles so Woodland beganessor Edward Sanger built two highways connecting Los Angeles with Reno County (now Orange County) which increased business opportunities for the townspeople. After World War I ended in 1918, many veterans decided to move back to America rather than stay behind in Europe or Asia because of the high cost of living back home at that time. Many families also decided to move out of California's Tulare Valley due to poor quality water supplies available there as well as increasing competition from other states for jobs during those years. In 1930-1931, when Hollywood began growing rapidly thanks largely to Edwin Epps' new movie studio just north of town called Universal Pictures studios - many people chose to move away from LA for fear that Hollywood could change their lives no matter what they did or said; however local merchants refused to sell items made outside LA because they knew that this would be indicative against their community's reputation within Hollywood). After multiple offers were made by Hollywood studios for various sites within or near Woodland - most notably on Veteran's Drive - it finally seemed like things might change when Mayor Forrest agreed not only reluctantly but actually helped negotiate these deals himself! By 1934-35 woodlanders had successfully achieved city status through ratification by vote at an annual meeting held at City Hall; however it wasn't until 1941 when President Franklin D Roosevelt declared California "a state without borders" which led eventually culminating with annexation by fellow state California some years later
