In 1861, George Wright bought 8 acres of rancho Encinal y Santa Paula from Manuel Nieto for $1,000 cash plus five horses and two mules. In 1865 he sold 1/2 mile south of present-day Woodland to John Sutter for $871 cash plus three horses and three mules. Sutter named his new land Sacramento Valley after then-President James Kinsley’s home state in California (now Nevada). It wasn't until 1888 when real estate developer Julius Rosenwald purchased 3/4 mile east of present-day Woodland from John Sutter for $3,500 that people started moving into what is now Woodland Township (the portion within unincorporated County Of Sacramento) from other parts of Northern California over horseback or foot during winter time only!
The first European to visit what is now Woodland was the Spanish Franciscan missionary, Fray Alonso de Molina in 1769. He named the area San Pedro de Alcántara after one of his patron saint's parishes in Spain. The Donation of Santa Clara also came about during this time. In 1812, an American Manuel Nieto purchased land from the Mexican government for $10,000 and started a ranch there called Rancho San Antonio. In 1821, he donated land for a university which would later become UC Berkeley. In 1888, early settler John Muir visited the area and named it "Woodland." At that time it was quite rural with few houses and most people living on their ranchos or small properties scattered around hillsides. A few years later, development began here with businesses coming to town to serve farmers who grew crops such as corn and beans on their land.
