Woodland, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The name "Woodland" is derived from the Huchiutl word wóhkīt (meaning "place where you can see the woods"). The first European to visit Woodland was Juan Bautista de Anza on his way to find a new route to California in 1769. He named the area Yerba Buena because he found there were abundant trees hereabouts and also because it resembled yerba buena (a type of gourd). In 1846, Junipero Serra established an adobe mission here called San Francisco Mission Parke. A year later, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna founded Rancho Los Alamos near present-day downtown Woodland for his own use and for hunting deer and other animals that he had captured as war booty. In 1847, Santa Anna sold Rancho Los Alamos to an Americanman by the name of George Cushman. The Americans built a log cabin here and began trading with Indians here before their main settlement permanent dateactually occurred on February 14th, 1850 when wagon train belonging to Captn John Sutter reached what is now Woodland from Stockton via Amador River valley under guidance of Nathaniel Hawthorne along with other members of Captain Sutter's 50 men strong gold prospecting expedition led by James Waugh arrived at El Sobrante Marsh just south of modern day West Pasadena after crossing Cedar Street Bridge over Arroyo Grande Creek on July 12th 1850
The first Europeans to explore and map the area now known as Woodland were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew in 1542. The land that would become Woodland was explored by various groups of people over the next few centuries, but it wasn't until 1827 that a group of Americans named John C. Fremont attempted to purchase the land from the Mexican government. After failed attempts at selling the land to other investors, Fremont sold it to Captain George A. Smith in 1847 for $2,000. In 1848, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded an agricultural colony on what is now Woodland, which he called San Antonio de los Pinos. The town was briefly renamed after Santa Anna in 1849 before being renamed Woodland again in 1861 because of its proximity to San Francisco Bay.
