Woodland, California is located in the Central Valley of California. It is bordered by Kern County on the north, Fresno County on the east, Nevada County on the south and Tulare County on the west. The population of Woodland was 914 as of 2010. The name "Woodland" comes from twoaccounts of its early history: one said it was named for a grove of trees that were to be found near a wooded area; and another account said that when Mission San Francisco de Asís arrived in 1772, they found an extensive woodland there and called it San Fernando Forest. The land where Woodland now stands was originally part of Rancho Los Nietos which was granted to Mexican landowners by President James K. Polk in 1848. The grant included 640 acres (248 hectares) including what is now Woodland. The first houses were built there in 1852-53 by Captain Levi Henschel who had bought Rancho Los Nietos from Manuel Nieto. At the time, Rancho Los Nietos covered an area larger than modern-day Santa Clara County and included much of what are today Brownwood, Hesperia and Arroyo Seco neighborhoods within Woodland boundaries. In 1870, after three years of litigation over ownership between Captain Levi Henschel’s heirs and José Antonio Corrales y Rojas (the original owner), rancho titles were finalized and assigned to José Joaquin Abad Santos whose family ran it until 1912 when it passed into non-family hands again. From 1912 until 1945 it was managed by various small farmers running it as a collective farm known as La Fea Cattle Company which raised Hereford cattle for slaughter in Doña Ana Mesa until those operations were shut down due to food shortages during World War II . In 1923 developer John Smedley purchased 462 acres (200 hectares) adjacent to La Fea Cattle Company property from various small farmers who had been managing it collectively since 1912 with hopes of creating a town or village on his land called Don Juan Village Phase I Ltd.. However no building permits were ever issued because Smedley never developed anything surrounding his proposed village site other than some land near his home which he left undeveloped while he lived elsewhere during that time period! He sold all remaining interest in Don Juan Village Phase I Ltd., including all buildings except his house lot at 404 South First Street to philanthropist Julius Rosenwald for $2 million dollars in 1928... Rosenwald renamed himself “The Waldorf Hotel Corporation” after coming into possession of the lots around 204 South First Street - thus beginning development at that address... Development continued along First Street until eventually parking lots became available just east of Main Avenue near

The first permanent European settlement in Woodland was made by Father Francisco Xavier Cabrillo, a Jesuit priest who explored and mapped the California coast in 1769. In 1807, American Commodore James K. Polk sent out a party of sailors from San Diego on what is now known as USS Perry to explore the California coastline. They discovered and named Point Conception (now part of Santa Clara County) after Admiral James Perry’s flagship of that year. A few years later, Americans built Fort Canby on an spit in Monterey Bay to protect their new colony from attack by Mexican forces. In 1849, another American expedition voted to establish a town called Stockton on Humboldt Bay, then part of Alameda County. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, leader of US cavalry during the Indian Wars and post-Civil War president of Dakota Territory. However, it never took off and only served as a stopover for travelers passing through South America before finally being abandoned in 1853. In 1865–66, President Abraham Lincoln created Yosemite National Park after his successful effort to save Yosemite Valley from destruction by gold miners during the Regent’s Expedition of 1859–60. The name “Yosemite” was chosen because it sounded like “yoo-seem-tay”—the word for “white mountain”—which was one of several nicknames given to Mount Half Dome during its early exploration and development as a national park.
