The history of Woodland, California is long and varied. The area that now makes up the city of Woodland was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people in the nineteenth century. In 1847, the Mexican government granted land to James Hutton for a Rancho San Buenaventura. The grant included a large tract of woodlands between Point Conception and Cambria Streets in what is now downtown Woodland. Over time, other settlers arrived in search of gold and other minerals. In 1853, John Sutter founded the town of Sacramento on Russian River flats east of Woodland. By 1870, Sacramento had outgrown its small population and began to grow rapidly thanks to its location at the junction of two major Routes 1 and 2roads. By 1871, it had become an incorporated city with a population of over 60,000 people. In 1888, developer Hiram Bingham submitted plans for what would become Woodland. He proposed developing land north of Sacramento along current-day Highway 99W from Cambria Street to Point Conception Street. The idea was met with skepticism by some local residents who saw this as another attempt by Bingham to take over their community without contributing anything himself. However, when it became clear that Bingham could not build anything on his own behalf but rather through donations from others he persuaded them to support his project by promising them economic development opportunities if they agreed to help him finance it through private enterprise instead of handouts from the federal government. This led to the creation of what is now known as the "Bingham Agreement." Under this agreement, Bingham promised to establish a commercial center in Woodland which would benefit both himself and his partners – chiefly merchants like George Hearn – while also providing jobs for locals who worked on construction or helped run the business ventures associated with it. These days, much credit goes towards Hearn for helping turn around downtown Sacramento during oneof its most difficult periods; after years struggling financiallyida times were tough for many businesses in town (including music halls such as Earls Court), Hearn's establishment made significant contributions towards restarting economic activity within town shortly after Mayor John Bigelow took office in 1917 In 1922–23 an addition called Forks Shopping Center opened adjacent to then-local grocery store Second City Grocery & Markets at busy corner nearpresent day Interstate 5 exit 78A just south off State Route 21E In 1926–27 home builder/developer Clyde Dyer erected drab moderniste architecture at present day Cornerstone Plaza opposite I-5 entrance before moving into larger building across street Dyer's buildings are still extant today within university district boundaries bounded by North Capitol Avenue (west), University Boulevard (east), Folsom Street (south) and Santa Clara Avenue (north). In 1887, the California Gold Rush began in earnest and soon made Woodland a key player. The town quickly became known for its gold prospecting activity and developed a strong cultural presence. In 1915, the city of San Francisco annexed Woodland and many of the town's residents moved to the new city. However, Woodland remains an important center for local government and culture today.
