Woodland is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 20,719 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Riverside and Orange counties and is about 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The area that now makes up Woodland was first settled by Native Americans in the late 19th century. A post office called "Woolston" was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from Woolston to what is now Woodland because of its closer proximity to Los Angeles. In 1926, developer Harry Chandler built a large tract of land west of town on what is now known as Markham Road. This tract became the nucleus of what would become Woodland when it was annexed by Los Angeles in 1932. During World War II, many servicemen spent time or worked during their deployments here while their units were training at nearby Redlands Army Air Field and Palmdale Army Air Base. As a result, much of present-day Woodland date back to this era including some retail streets such as Middlefield Avenue which still bear military namesakes like Fort MacArthur Boulevard and Vandenberg Drive which are still used today for business purposes only (Vandenberg Drive being renamed Crenshaw Boulevard). The construction of Interstate 5 began shortly after World War II ended and added an extra 2 miles (3 km) to the reaching radius for those living near I-5 (the incorporated town had barely enough population then to support even one mail carrier). Thus although most residents today lived within 1 mile (2 km) or less of I-5 prior to its construction - much has changed since! I-5 has made all but two blocks between eastbound lanes across from City Hall & southwest corner Of Main Street industrial wasteland; single family homes have been replaced by apartments & condos while major employers have closed down-- rendering many services unavailable; 4 major thoroughfares lie vacant with few businesses existing within them—one corridor leading directly into downtown LA

The city's growth continued until World War II when it was destroyed by fire. In 1847, the first post office was established in Woodland. The population of Woodland increased rapidly from its original dozen residents in 1847 to over 100 by 1850. By 1870, Woodland had become a thriving small town and had a school, store, hotel and several churches. The first oil well was drilled in Woodland in 1901 and production began shortly thereafter. By 1915, the town had an oil refinery and a smelter. In 1930, the town became an incorporated city under California's statehood laws. The city annexed portions of rural Rancho Cucamonga on February 22, 1933.
