The name "Woodland" is derived from the Chumash word WOOD-a place where wild game was plentiful and there was also an abundance of acorns for fuel. The first European to visit what is now Woodland was Capt. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 during his trip from Mexico City to San Francisco Bay. He sighted land that he thought might be Isla de la Victoria (Island of theVictoria). After landfall he named the spot Isla de las Nieves because of its resemblance to a snowstorm scene seen from his ship's bowsprit - this event took place on November 7, 1542 while exploring southern Marin County. On May 17, 1859 John Cranch discovered oil reserves in Kern County and soon began drillings east of present day Woodland Cemetery and south of today's fairgrounds as far south as Bakersfield! This rich history takes us back to 1849 when Ramon Ortiz established a road junction in what is now downtown Woodland with dirt roads leading northward into Kern County and southward into Unincorporated Alameda County along Rice Ranch Road which ran through today's southwest corner of town northeast to Interstate 5 nears Arroyo Seco Dam; then continuing east along current day I-5 until it enters Coachella Valley just outside Desert Hot Springs Village off US 93 near Porter Ranch Boulevard/I-15 exit; finally ending up in Banning about 5 miles east of present day Woodland Cemetery proper on old US 90 Via San Antonio Road/I-5 exit.) A post office called Woods Hole opened at this junction on December 1st, 1850 and remained in operation until 1909.] The community started developing around these early beginnings with sawmills and other woodworking businesses starting up around 1865 when timber became available from local forests. By 1870 there were 10 sawmills operating in town including one owned by George Waddell that processed lumber for both local farmers and Southern Pacific Railroad trains loaded with cottonwood logs destined for their mills downriver at Stockton or Tracy across the Kings River between 1865-1870! In 1881 Leland Stanford founded Stanford University here which would later become known as Caltech - bringing many students here over the years including such Nobel Prize winners as Max Born (1909), Konrad Lorenz (1922) & Edward Teller (1947). Today much of Silicon Valley's wealth comes from its participation in Google+ Hangouts events hosted right here at Woodlands Creek Park followed by further Google Ventures investment opportunities In 1906 Charles Fenton organized a group to purchase 2,000 acres adjacent to what are now Downtown Greenbelt for $6 per acre which would eventually become Presidio Park.[Today] In 1916 an enterprising citizen named Hiram Sibley built a millinery store next door to First National Bank located at 3509 Eureka Ave #1010 inside today’s Stonestown Shopping Center] In 1933 William Randolph Hearst purchased 640 acres southeast of downtown Los Angeles for $2 million dollars renamed him Hearst Castle after his family's long affiliation with newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst who had been born into a wealthy New England family some 25 years earlier!] One interesting fact about this rich history is that many people who have made significant contributions either directly or indirectly to American culture or society have lived or worked in or around Woodlands: Anthony Peake (director), Jules Verne (author), Hedy Lamarr (actress), Lawrence Ferlinghetti (writer), Stanley Kubrick (director), Elon Musk (@elonmusk)
