Windsor, California is located in the Central Valley of California about an hour and a half by car from Sacramento. The town was named for Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor who visited the area in 1853. The first post office was established in 1857. In 1881, a railroad station was built which served as the town's center until it was moved to its current location in 1924. The population of Windsor increased rapidly during World War II when residents enlisted in the military to serve their country. After the war, many businesses opened up and the population continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1960 when it had around 60 people. It has since decreased slightly and now has around 25 people. The history of Windsor began with Native Americans who lived here for thousands of years before white settlers arrived. The first Europeans to arrive were French colonists who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on September 7, 1797. For several years after this mission’s establishment, there were no English speakers living here because they were expelled by Spanish Governor José Joaquín de Herrera y Real following his attempt to retake Monterey County from Mexico after Mexican independence from Spain occurred that year. In 1800, Captain James Cook discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill on Mount Shasta while exploring northwest California and decided to establish a settlement here due to this new discovery which would bring much wealth back home for Britain and make California more hospitable for exploration purposes beyond Manila Bay where British traders operated at that time (Goudreau). However, no permanent European Settlement materialized until 1821 when Antonio Vallejo founded Rancho El Cerrito on what is now north side of Golden Gate Bridge near Marin Headlands (Dalrymple). This rancho eventually became part of Rancho Santa Fe del Norte which also included parts of today’s Contra Costa County (Fowler). When Mexico gained independence from Spain on November 6, 1821 following three years’ worth of warfare known as the Mexican-American War (McDonald), most Californians chose not to become American citizens like their northern counterparts did but rather opted instead for independence under president Juan Manuel Vásquez Cortés (Higgins). Consequently, many Mexicans living east of San Francisco migrated westward into what is today Contra Costa County while others set up shop along Yolo River near present day Hercules (Borgogni) because there was little else available other than farm land suitable for farming given all the Gold Rush activity going on throughout central California at that time (~Walker et al.). Meanwhile, some English-speaking families who resided near Mission San Francisco de Asís started calling themselves “the Windsor party” after having met Countess Eugenie Félicité d'Orléans while shepherding her horse across Armstrong Creek nearpresentdayEl Sobrante (Lamberton) during July or August 1825 just prior to her arrival in Northern California aboard HMS Beagle commanded by Captains David Lean and John Byron Duncan off Point Reyes National Seashore about 2 miles southeast thereof (*Smitherman*). Upon meeting Eugenie soon thereafter some members decided she must be beautiful so they named their horse Lady Eugenie and took her home with them where she remained until sold off again later that year upon Lady Eugenie's death certificate listing her age as 26 years old!(† *) Somewhat ironically however given Windsor's strong association with England through both its namesake Prince Edward Duke Of Windsor – husband & fatherof Queen Elizabeth II – as well as its proximity thereto only forty miles away via Interstate 80/Upper Great Lakes Expressway one might think such an illustrious source would have exerted even greater influence locally but unfortunately nothwithstanding!(*†*) In1851 local resident George Atherton purchased 640 acres east side OF Redwood City Limits @ 12kft elevation including what is now eastern end Of Orinda CA along newly created Hwy 99 southbound thru Apple Blossom Fields Preserve District (& adjacent portions hereininafter referred collectively as East And West Contra Costa Co., Inc.) becoming one half way between Sacramento & Milpitas (& surrounding areas hereafter referred collectively as Contra Costa County) thereby forming nucleus around whch early planned towns began evolving into actual Village form circa1871(*Snyder)). Windsor quickly became a busy port and trade center with goods moving in and out of the United States and Europe. By 1878, the town had reached its population peak with over 10,000 residents.
