In 1872, Father Miguel de la Parra built a mission chapel at present-day Canaleta Park across from modern-day First Presbyterian Church in downtown Windsor for the local indigenous people whom he had been converting to Catholicism since 1851 while living among them near Mono Lake (now part of Yosemite National Park). Father LaParra also founded a school for Native Americans which still operates today as St Mary’s Catholic School (later renamed Holy Cross Catholic School), as well as an orphanage and dispensary.. The post office opened in 1875 and became known as "Dixon." The name changed again to "Windsor" after Sir John Aird (1847-1921), British Ambassador to America who served from 1903 until his death in 1921.. A fire destroyed most of the buildings around town during 1910 but not before village founder/mayor Augustus Pogue erected a new brick courthouse with 10 rooms facing Main Street which reopened on October 4th of that year under new name of "Pogue Courthouse". vernacular architecture characterized many early American towns such as this one with redbrick or stone walls topped with weatherboards or shingle roofs surrounded by adobe or stucco houses with corrugated metal roofs which continued into the 20th century.. It should be noted that most of these homes were constructed using convict labor recruited during thegold Rush era when many miners went back east rather than leave their families behind due to harsh conditions outside mining camps
