Windsor, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Windsor was founded in 1887 by brothers George and John Windsor. It became a city in 1911. In 1994, it was merged with Merced to form Merced-Windsor. Windsor is located on State Route 93 between Sacramento and Oakland. The first post office in Windsor opened on February 14, 1887. The first town meeting occurred on March 3rd of that year to decide what name to give the new community. The vote chose "Windsor" after the home of Queen Victoria and her consorts which was located nearby on Stagecoach Road. In 1911, when the state of California gained its current borders, Windsor became part ofmerced which included parts of Needles and Emeryville as well as most of Richmond County including East Palo Alto (the incorporated city). At this time there were only two other towns within Californian borders larger than 1,000 people: San Francisco and Los Angeles! merced annexed much more area east of Interstate 80 after they purchased it from Rancho San Joaquin de Bakersfield for $2 million in 1944! Despite calls for annexation by other cities during that time period (including Berkeley), merced refused any offers until they saw fit to annexe windors because they felt it would create an “industrial suburb” adjacent to their properties on Sutter Street/Richmond Avenue/Union Ave., near Alviso Creek where they had chemical plants built beginning around 1919 into the early 1960s! Today many people still refer to themselves as “mercedites” or simply as “ locals” even though their municipal boundaries have changed several times over the years
