Windsor, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,754 at the 2010 census. Windsor is located in Kern County and it is part of the Bakersfield–Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. Windsor is known for its wine industry and has been ranked as one of the top wine-producing towns in the United States. The first Europeans to visit what is now Windsor were French traders traveling along the Diablo River in 1823. They named their new settlement after King George III of England, who had just become king that year. The first post office was established in 1826, and by 1830, Windsor had a store and two schools. In 1831, an ad appeared in The Californian newspaper announcing a gold prospect at nearby Lassen Peak. Prospectors found only quartz veinags but soon discovered large amounts of gold ore on several hills near Lassen Peak. This discovery led to a flood of arrivals from all over California seeking yellow gold during the 1850s Gold Rush era; by 1860, Windsor's population had reached 1,100 residents and 10 stores. During this time period, many people from neighboring communities came to live and work in Windsor because they wanted access to these new riches. By 1870, though tensions still existed due to competition for jobs sparked by rapid growth rates within both communities (particularly with respect to housing), local leaders decided that it would be best if both communities merged into one municipality under a single government structure called Kern County (organized December 3rd 1870). At this time there were only 7 homes total in town – 4 churches and 3 stores – with most people living on farms or ranching properties around Lassen Peak or elsewhere within sight of town limits where they could sell goods or services back into town before returning home again each day. At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), when wartime production requirements increased dramatically due to America's need for munitions throughout much of Europe and Asia, Windsor boasted 50 businesses totaling 400 workers employed making everything from agricultural products through engineering services; roofing materials; automobiles; clocks; radios; typewriters; printing presses; tiresome household tasks such as laundering clothes using lye solution until they became wrinkle-free!
