During World War II, Windsor played an important role in providing food for Allied troops stationed in Southern California; during that time, it also served as a training ground for many military personnel who would later fight in Europe or Asia. After the war, Windsor experienced significant growth as a result of new technology investments such as oil exploration and ranching; however, it declined after 2000 when nearby Kern County transitioned from agricultural to suburban development. Today, Windsor is home to a small population consisting mainly of retirees living on their plots of land near Kern River Bridge Park which offers opportunities for hiking/biking/swimming/golf/tennis/horseback riding/picnicking/.
