It is bordered by Vallejo to the east and south; Petaluma to the west and north; Oakville to the northwest and Crystal City to the northeast. The first European settlers in what is now Wildomar were French explorers who landed there on September 10, 1769 during an expedition led by Captain Nicolas-Jacques Conte. Captain Conte's party journeyed up Mount Saint Helena from which they made landfall on October 25th/26th at what would become known as present-day Wildomar Bluff. The first land grant given in Marin County was that called Rancho San Francisco del Norte which was granted by Governor Manuel Menéndez Nieto on February 14th 1847 to José Murillo. Upon his death in 1853 his wife María Antonia Menéndez de la Vega inherited it and sold it in 1862 to José María Herrera y Sánchez who renamed it wildomanor for himself but still kept Virginie Creek flowing through it for irrigation purposes until 1865 when he built a dam across it. In 1870 John Dutton bought Rancho San Francisco del Norte from Herrera y Sánchez and changed its name to Napa Valley Railroad Company with headquarters at Calistoga where he lived until his death in 1906. From 1863 until 1875 all water rights passed through Juanita Creek into Napa River before being diverted into Napa River through a system of canals completed by Don Carlos Buell in 1865 because vineyards were expanding rapidly into rural areas outside of Sonoma County In 1876 Henry Fenton took over management of the railroad company and renamed it part time Sonoma Valley Railway Company with head office at Redwood City where he lived until his death also in 1906 By 1907 fruit production had become so extensive that demand for water became too great so Buell decided to build a canal system parallel to Napa River feeding various reservoirs forming present day Waterford Drive near modern day Petaluma He also began construction on what would eventually be known as Ventura Boulevard which ran parallel between Fillmore Street and Lake Berryessa leaving Ventura Street open only for delivery vehicles while construction proceeded down Fillmore Street transportation became inadequate so equipment was moved from Fillmore Street onto Ventura Boulevard whereupon both streets were widened will two blocks creating today's intersection of Ventura Boulevard and State Route 1 . This event marked completion of Highway System No 2 including Santa Clara Avenue , El Cerrito Road , Fillmore Street - current day I-5 . By 1915 Fruit Grower's Union had formed which demanded better conditions for workers including job security benefits such as health insurance Fruit production continued expand however due primarily To climate change (meeting increasing flights) disease outbreaks became more common causing many farmers throughout Northern California problems such as pests infestations caused by new species introduced during this time such as aphids imported from Europe while other diseases resulted from incorrect cultural practices used during this period such as using sulfur dioxide fertilizers rather than organic matter which increased weed growth
