The first Americans to settle in what is now Wildomar were two groups of Spanish immigrants, who arrived on horseback from Durango, Mexico in 1846. They named their new village San Miguel de Allende after Don Miguel de Alvarado y Costilla, governor of New Spain during the Mexican-American War. A post office was established at Wildomar in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. In 1881, William Haines built an ranch near present-day Wildomar for his wife's family and themselves. This became known as "Haines Rancho". In 1905, Haines sold his interest to Harry Culp about half way up the ridge that makes up today's downtown Wildomar. In 1912 Jack Fenton opened a grocery store at 424 N Main Street which became one of the most popular businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1978. The last resident to live here passed away on January 8th, 2019 at the age of 92 years old
Wildomar is located in the Inyo County, California region. It was first settled in 1847 by Russian fur traders who named it for the wild onions that grew there. The post office at Wildomar was established in 1849. The town started to develop as a cotton and cattle ranching community during the late 1800s. By 1910, Wildomar had a population of about 350 people. The townsite was acquired by the California Southern Pacific Railroad in 1916, and became part of their San Joaquin Valley division. The railroad merged with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1968, and all railway operations were discontinued within Wildomar proper on September 15th of that year. With no rail service remaining, most of the town's residents began relying on buses which served as their only form of transportation until the opening of Interstate 5 near town limits in 1984.
