According to the Wildomar Historical Society, "The history of optical accessories in Wildomar began with a single family who operated a blacksmith shop on Main Street in 1887." By 1922, the smiths had passed away and their son continued operations until his death in 1954. From then on, the business was handled by three daughters who continue to run it to this day. Over time, Optical Supplies has become one of the largest distributors of optical products in Northern California. In 1951 they opened an office at 5200 Gaudette Avenue in nearby Menlo Park and continues to distribute products throughout Northern California today. Wildomar is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 26,929 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Ventura County and is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name Wildomar may be derived from Spanish meaning "wild olive." The wild oleander grew plentifully hereabouts in consequence of its rich loam being annually saturated with watercourses that emptied into the Pacific Ocean near present-day Moorpark; and thence by means of ditches to the sea. This mixture (?) of fresh and salt water produced an intense fragrance which continued throughout summer days even when all other smells were extinct; it formed one reason why this parts were called "the Wells of Wonder" during those early years when there was no railway within range to carry passengers or goods to market. In 1786 Juan Bautista Cabrillo explored these coasts for Discovery Bay Company, but did not find any oil fields until 1859 when Onofre de la Sala discovered Napa Valley's wine country. After a fruitless search he abandoned his attempt and returned to San Francisco in 1860. In 1875 James Wolkentin founded a lumber yard on Rancho Santa Margarita which became known as Wolkentin Lumber Co., later merged into International Paper Co.. One year earlier, on October 15th, 1874, Wildomar had its first post office with Elisha Copley serving as First Postmaster In 1907 Wildomar held its first football game against Moorpark High School played under new Rules-AFL varsity football rules at Empire Stadium before over 10 thousand spectators looking forward to what would become annual events there until World War II when facilities dwindled and postseason games moved back up Highway 101 out of town entirely
