The town grew rapidly thanks to its natural resources and its location on the San Francisco Peninsula between Oakland and San Rafael Springs. In 1870, John Goodwin opened a general store and hotel which became one of the most important businesses in town. By 1875, wildomoars had a school, Methodist church (1875), physician (1876), four-room block (1878), grocery store (1879) – all built by local citizens or donated by locals to help improve local infrastructure for growth. In 1886 Samuel Morse opened his new telephone line from San Francisco to Alameda County; this made Wildomar an important center for communication within Marin County as well as across Northern California

The name "wildomar" means "place where there are wild flowers." The first people to live in what is now Wildomar were Native American Mono Indians who hunted game in and around present-day Wildomar Creek and other areas along the creek. The Mission Inn was built on Topanga Creek near present-day Westbury, California in 1821 by Father José Cisneros. When gold was discovered nearby in 1848, many miners came to Wildomar looking for it because of its potential as a mining camp. In 1850, three men named George Wetherill founded Wetherill Ranch which included land that would later become Wildomar. Wetherill opened up some of his land to cattle when he became interested in growing crops so he could sell them back to his investors whengold prices went up. In 1851, Wetherill married Anna Maria Ramirez and built a home on their ranch called Villa Ramirez which still stands today within walking distance of both Main Street and Highway 91A. In 1872, two brothers named Charles Hemenway started a sawmill on the east side of Topanga Creek near where Villa Ramirez stood five years earlier. They also began farming with raised red earth walls around their homes that remain today as evidence of early agricultural life hereabouts (the walls have since been removed). On October 15th 1870 an earthquake hit Kern County killing ten people including four brothers Hemenway: Charles (Chester), John (Johnnie), Augustus (Gus) and George (George Washington) Hemenway; their wives Mary Elizabeth Heenan and Sarah Jane Head; two children: infant son John Jr., aged 1 year 3 months; Chester’s wife Emma died immediately after giving birth – her husband survived but lost an arm below the elbow due to fracture caused by falling objects while performing fieldwork; 8-year old daughter Flora): So much damage had been done by this temblor that[Hemenway] placed all his family & effects into 4 wagons & took them 6 miles down Topanga Canyon towards Sutterville without rest or water till night arrived at Sutterville under great fatigue etc.; finally reached civilization before daybreak 25Oct70 116 lives lost One hundred sixty five people stranded - three days according to contemporary reports In 1880, James Fenton bought 120 acres southeast of Villa Ramirez from Josefina Sanchez for $12 per acre ($2/acre). This area became known as Fenton Farm until it was donated by Mr. Fenton to Mills College in 1923 (#5609). From here on out it has been used primarily for agriculture though occasional development has occurred such as housing developments beginning about 1950 (#7441). Today's largest building on Fenton Farm is an original adobe house dating from 1907 which now serves as headquarters for Mills College's Agricultural Experiment Station #4(#8693). A post office called "Wildomar" was established at this location on July 26th 1860,[1] becoming operational on September 17th 1860.[2][3] A store operated at this location from 1861 until 1865.[4] A school operated here from 1865 until 1908 when it moved onto Main Street adjacent to Mills College[5]. A church service will be held there tomorrow morning dedicated to Mrs.(Mrs.) Jessie Butler Kester who served ([1907-1996]) as Pastor Emeritus [6][7]. It should be noted that although much information exists about events occurring during these years within Wildomars immediate vicinity[8], not all accounts agree upon every detail thus making verification difficult or even impossible given time constraints hereinbelow!
