Wildomar, California was founded in 1853 by James W. Cook and it is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California. The population of Wildomar as of the 2010 census was 21,898. The first people to live in what is now Wildomar were Mission Indians who came from San Francisco in 1821. In 1853, James W. Cook named the area after his father, Captain John Clough who had been killed during the Gold Rush at Sutter's Mill. Cook and his partner David Bancroft developed a small ranch here which they called "New Market". In 1863 they sold their share of the Rancho New Market to John Pemberton who renamed it the Rancho San Fernando de la Paloma. In 1868 an American settler by the name of George Hearn bought some land east of San Fernando Creek from Pemberton for $2 per acre. He built a cabin here and started calling himself Hearnstown because he thought that this would be more likely to get cattle across the creek on horseback than on foot. By 1870 he had built a larger cabin with four rooms and six outbuildings which he named Hearnville after himself and his wife Elizabeth (who later became known as Mrs. Hinton). In 1876Alexander Shields established a post office at Hearnville which functioned until 1886 when it was moved to nearby La Verne because mail service between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara was then available only overland through Death Valley via Mono Pass. On July 14, 1886, Averell Harriman delivered postal orders for residents of Mexico City ordering local goods such as soap, flour and coffee from Laverne through Death Valley before continuing on to Pasadena where they were delivered by boat across Mono Pass into Monterrey on October 12th On December 17th 1888 Elisha Gray arrived in California aboard the ship "John Caird" with 129 passengers including 16 Americans including Mr. Gray who had come overland from Oregon Territory just prior to the gold rush ferrying supplies back downriver towards civilization Gray soon realized that there was significant potential for business at White Sands Reef where mining operations were being conducted by Mexican miners working under contract from American companies such asDonaldson & Co., Dominguez Bros., Jardine Matheson & Co., etc… so much so that he decided sites along Long Beach Boulevard should also become commercial areas but this idea never got off the ground due to financial limitations .Gray purchased 5 acres adjacent to White Sands Reef near present day Redondo Beach which would eventually become known as Gray's Harbor When gray died in 1901 his son-in-law William Randolph Hearst took control ofgray's interests within Hearst Oil Company .Hearst began investing heavily in wildomar real estate beginning with purchasing nearly all ofthe patents related thereto between 1901-1914 inclusive…………………..As wildomar became increasingly developed over time various enlargements/modifications/updates have been made both inside and outside ofthe current boundaries defined herein………………….Today much remains unchanged about oneof America’s earliest postoffice towns………………………………………..
