This decision marked the first time that such regulations had been put into place within any major American city.

The first post office at Wildomar was established on February 12, 1849. The name of the town changed to Wildomar after John Sutter's father-in-law saw wild olives growing near Rome on October 16th, 1848 while looking out his house windows. In 1852 John Sutter erected the first store and started selling goods to the local farmers. By 1870 there were over 300 residents living in what would become Wildomar proper. In 1907 Wildomar consolidated with nearby Calistoga and adopted its current form as a city with a population of 31 people. Some of the earliest businesses in the new city include Jenson & Sons saddlesmiths (founded by John Jensen), Fenton’s grocery (established by George Fenton) and Wiman’s bakery (later renamed Bakewell’s). In 1960 Stoneware Industries shut down their plant here; it had been producing high quality stoneware since 1874 In late 2007/early 2008 wild fires burned through most of Napa Valley destroying or damaging many homes, businesses and other important infrastructure including roads and bridges; this event has been called one of Northern California's largest natural disasters ever . Many people lost their homes completely or portions thereof, including many notable locals like Neil Armstrong who resided just outside town limits at Armstrong Ranch during these times
In 1847, the Mexican government ceded California to the United States. The area now included in Wildomar County was part of Benicia County until 1850, when it became part of Sacramento County. In 1853, Wildomar was organized as a census-designated place (CDP) by the US Census Bureau. As of the 2010 US Census, there were 903 people living in Wildomar CDP.
