The name Wildomar comes from Mission San Francisco de Asis (Mission Dolores), which was founded in 1776 by José Altamirano and Father Rafael Rivera. The mission was destroyed by a storm in 1812 but many of the stones remain as part of the foundation that still stands today. In 1853, Captain George Parker built a house on Point Reyes Peninsula for his wife Sophia and their two children. In 1857 he sold land to John Doolittle for $10 per acre. Doolittle named his property Point Reyes Station after Admiral George Washington's flagship during the Mexican-American War who had helped him capture Mexico City with General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army. Living there until his death in 1902 were Elizabeth Woolridge Grant Wood (1838-1916), author of "A Charge to Keep" (1888) and "Woods: A Life" (1984); her husband Henry Adams Wood (1871-1946), father of Eleanor Roosevelt; Rear Admiral Milton Sperry Wright (1885-1966), Usonghara Park superintendent; James Hoggart McCloy (born 1924), founder and first president of Sacred Heart University 1/2 mile south east of junction with PCH is marker #9016

The city went through intense reconstruction following the war which saw many buildings replaced or rebuilt including its jails and schools. In 1970, Wildomar was designated a Historic District by the State of California; this placed it under state jurisdiction for planning and zoning purposes.[1] The city has experienced significant redevelopment throughout its history; most notably after World War II when it underwent intensive rebuilding following war-time damage which included replacement of many buildings including its jails and schools. Wildomar, California was founded in 1853 by George Washington Dixon. The first post office in Wildomar was established in 1854. In 1865, the town became a county seat of Contra Costa County. In 1868, the county was disbanded and the town became part of Marin County.
