In 1877, John Atherton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) from the predecessor company to Pasadena & San Gabriel Railroad that had been chartered six years earlier. He named his new settlement for his grandson John Atherton Jr., Sr.. After years of petitioning by citizens and pressure from railroads, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a transcontinental railroad through Southern California on December 4, 1881 – which became known as the Santa Fe Railway Company's " Colorado Project". By 1888 Hargrave had sold all his holdings except for 116 acres (46 hectares), located at Third Street and Vinegar Hill Road southwest of town limits – to Samuel Inslee for $2 million dollars ($40 million today). On October 1st 1889 Inslee dedicated this section of Central Boulevard between 3rd Street and Vinegar Hill Road within what would become downtown Whittieri; thus starting what would be known as Inslee Avenue/Downtown Whittieri Place name origin story.
The post office opened in 1886 under the name "Pasadena", changed to "Whitton" in 1902 due to local opposition from residents who saw their name used instead by other incorporated municipalities such as West Hollywood or Beverly Hills; finally reverted back to "Whitton" afterINSLEY objection
Ailerons built their first house on present day First Avenue southwest of Main Street on November 11th 1895. White Russian immigrants also arrived here during this time period

One street corner in particular has been synonymous with local identity - Third Street near Vinegar Hill Road - since its beginnings: Third Streets landmark district included everything from convenience stores operated by locals like Gertie Yates until eventually independent business districts emerged along Main streets throughout much larger Los Angeles County during the 1990s age change.

To commemorate Rosenwald's donation, Mayor John Pucetti declared July 16th "Julius Rosenwald Day" in 1987. The following year LAX named their new terminal building after him - Rosenwald Tower. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with the addition of numerous factories and housing developments such as Canoga Park Drive and North Hollywood Boulevard which are still visible today
The town of Whittier was founded in 1887 by Father George Whittier and his wife, Rosetta Stone. The town is located just north of Pasadena and east of Los Angeles. It became a city in 1959.
