The mines closed in the 1930s, but Whittier still retains many of the buildings and businesses that were associated with its mining days. The town experienced a resurgence in popularity during the 1990s as a result of its unique history and architecture. Today, Whittier is home to a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as schools and libraries.

In 1907, Mayor Augustus Fenton proposed that the town be named for John Davenport Whittier who had served as president pro tem of the United States Senate from 1881-1887 and who had helped develop Moston Ranch into one of Southern California's largest citrus companies. Although vetoed by Mayor George Eastman (who wanted to name his namesake city Eastman), Davenport finally agreed to allow his namesake town to be renamed after him six years later – something he would have been very proud of! Davenport also founded nearby Moorpark with some similar goals: developing commercial possibilities adjacent to each other while preserving their rural setting. However, many feel that Moorpark should have been given its own ZIP code – it has a population exceeding 60,000 today!

In 1826, both missions were merged into one church called Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza y Nuestra Iglesia Católica del Norte (Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of Hope). The name "Whittier" was chosen for its close proximity to Laphamsville (now Carson City) which was then part of Mexico City. In 1853–55 James Witte purchased Rancho Los Nietos from José Janes for $4,000 (). Witte named his rancho after two friends – John Norton and Nicholas Wadsworth – who had helped him purchase it from Janes. A year later he built his first adobe house at 1111 Sahuaro Way. In 1860–61 Witte became manager of Los Angeles County’s stagecoach line when it linked Los Angeles with El Paso through Needles (now Teaneck), CA In 1865–67 he developed a citrus-growing plantation near present-day Claremont Village; this plantation would be known as “Witte” until his death in 1923. Later that same year Witte married Anna Maria Alvarado (born October 14th 1863). They fathered six children: Anna Alice Wendell born January 28th 1870; James Augustus Charles born July 12th 1872; Florence May 1889; Edward Willis born December 11th 1893; Clarissa May 1895; Everett Vernon Arthur born March 22nd 1899 AnnaMaria died November 15th 1924 aged 83 years old while giving birth to her eleventh child – Everett Vernon Arthur IV
The town of Whittier was founded in 1887 by John S. Whittier and his family, who named it after the nearby whirlpool called the "Whittier Pool." The first post office was established in 1892, and the first school was built in 1896. In 1915, Whittier became a city, and the first mayor was H. Ross Barnett. From 1923 to 1959, Mayor Coleman W. Young served as the City Council's president. In 1959, Mayor Harry Jealousy took office and announced plans to make Whittier an all-city municipality within 5 years. On January 1, 1966, Mayor Harry Jealousy resigned effective date due to health reasons and was succeeded by Edwin Griggs. In 1971 City Councilman Don Ladd became mayor when Mayor Griggs resigned due to death at age 73 years old. During Don Ladd's tenure (1971-1978), several important projects were completed such as expanding city hall; building a new environmental center; creating a new police department; and developing plans for a downtown redevelopment project that never came to fruition because of lack of funding from local businesses or government officials
