Whittier, California is a city located in Southern California. The population was 66,844 at the 2010 census, making it the 15th largest city in Los Angeles County and the second most populous city in Orange County after Santa Ana. The City of Whittier was officially incorporated on February 17, 1888 by order of Governor Manuel Nieto de la Torre. The name was derived from "Wichita" which means " settlement". By 1920 Latinos made up almost 60% of the population and white residents only 20%. In 1951–1957, construction began on what would become Dodger Stadium and Whittier quickly became associated with that iconic stadium as well as later years hosting NCAA football games during those years including Super Bowls XVI and XXIX. In 1990–1992 voters approved Measure M (also known as “ Measure J”), which established local government boundary changes that led to downtown Whittier becoming part of Pasadena while north/central Whittier became part of Huntington Beach. Today's boundaries are more similar to when they were created than when Dodger Stadium was built – downtown is now bounded by Harbor Boulevard to the south, Mulholland Drive to the east (partially due to annexation by La Quinta Park), Federal Way Boulevard between Harbor Boulevard and Interstate 5 (to its north) and State Route 57 between Harbor Boulevard and I-5 (to its west). One reason why Downtown has seen continued growth throughout these years is because much of it has been leased or sold for commercial use since Measure M passed in 1990: commercial districts such as Staples Center have sprung up along Harbor Boulevard near I-5; Fashion Valley has taken root just east of I-5 within walking distance from Downtown; English Bayou runs southeast from Downtown through residential areas before merging into Pasadena Creek at North Temple Street;[1] Finally Huntington Beach annexed parts of western Anaheim Hills including portions east of Crenshaw Blvd., annexing some businesses between East Coast Avenue and Indian Wells Road before finally reaching Aliso Viejo ultimately affecting about one third of Irvine's total workforce.[2][3]

Whittier, California (population: over 100,000) is a city in Southern California. It was founded in 1892 by the brothers Isaac and Edward Whittier as a citrus fruit and tobacco-growing town. The city grew rapidly after World War II, reaching its peak of population in 1960 with over 200,000 residents. However, Whittier has since declined in population and economic status, due to the cities of Los Angeles and Pasadena nearby. Whittier’s history can be traced back to 1892 when the brothers Isaac and Edward Whittier decided to establish themselves as citrus farmers in what is now central Los Angeles County. The Whittiers were successful at growing oranges and other fruits but were unable to sell their products because they were not able to find buyers in downtown LA. This led them to start a small town called “Wineford” on their property near present-day Playa Vista Boulevard and Villa Park Drive. The Whittiers named their new town after themselves – “Whitton” – which was also the name of their farm where they grew crops for their family business. The town quickly became known for its orange crop which was an important source of income for the Whittleys. In 1915, the whittleys sold their land within wineford village boundaries to wealthy banker Julius Rosenwald for $1 million dollars ($24 million today). Rosenwald developed the area into one of Southern California’s most profitable real estate ventures during World War I by importing agricultural materials from abroad and selling them through his own stores throughout Orange County. He also donated land adjacent to his store blocks on First Street between Vinegar Hill Road (now Fairfax Avenue) and Western Avenue (now Ventura Boulevard). These donations helped makeWhitton one of Southern California’s most prestigious neighborhoods during this time period.
