In 1912, they built their first school which still stands today - Modern School District #1 School District #2 School district #3 Elementary/Secondary schools were build between 1919-1927 with $500,000 from local citizens In 1942 during World War II the Japanese bombed Whittier killing 36 people including 10 children in what has been called one of the worst terrorist attacks against civilians in U.S. history. On December 5th 1959 Whitton residents organized themselves into a Nuclear resistance group called Citizens for Nuclear Responsibility which successfully prevented any nuclear testing from taking place at our state park until 1994 when there finally was an unauthorized test!
