The town prospered because it had easy access to water resources and could grow crops such as wheat, cotton and oranges; wharves were built along both coasts for shipping goods upland across the ocean; passenger ferries served local passengers between Carpinteria Harbor on Orange County’s south coast and downtown San Bernardino; industries included shipbuilding yards manufacturing sailing ships anchors chains tires shoes clogs etc., while parttimers worked in nearby agricultural fields such as citrus groves or cattle ranches However by 1860 only about 100 people lived hereabouts due to various factors including disease brought over by soldiers stationed there during the American Civil War including two epidemics that struckWhittier within months each other1860-1861and1862-1863associated with cholera pandemic then raging throughout most ofSouthernCalifornia at that time The last resident white person living in Whittier died in 1978 .
