The name Whittier comes from Yoknapatawpha County and means "place where the trees grow." The first European to visit what is now Whittier was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 2, 1542. He named it La Isla de la Bodega del Rey (Island of the Beer King). In 1824, James Winton built a cabin on Rancho Los Cerritos while prospecting for gold near present-day Fremont. A post office called Rancho Los Cerritos was established in 1827, but it never served any residents because General Antonio José María Cámpora forbade Californians to establish themselves west of San Francisco Bay. In 1838, Jens Jensen began farming land at what is now 29th Street and North Coast Highway in what became known as East Whittier. He leased this land from George Wessels who had bought it from Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla about two years earlier for $3000 per year with 10% royalties on all exports brought back by Jensen's team of men under his direction and title of Director General del Valle de Atacama y Tolosa - headquarters for all Indian Affairs within Spanish Alta California during that era - including whaling operations off Monterey Bay which commenced on July 4, 1840. The first store opened at this location in 1840 along with a schoolhouse and various other buildings erected subsequent to that date including an opera house used also as a barn or stable until 1893 when it was destroyed by fire; finally becoming an agricultural community with citrus production accounting for over 50% of its total economic output until 1973 when those activities were displaced by high tech industry growth which led to increased competition and resultant joblessness among many mid level earners across much of Northern California Communities such as Whittier/East Palo Alto/San Mateo County etc., particularly since 1969 when state law mandated local government be more involved with setting stipulated employment goals rather than allowing jobs to go unfilled due primarily to business model changes precipitated by state deregulation following World War II

In 1924, Don Aitken founded Aitken Airways Corporation with a hangar on Endy Road near Interstate 80 south of town; air travel began operations from Aitken Airport soon after its creation. The Monterey Peninsula Regional Transportation District operates bus rapid transit service through Whittier serving most of the populated areas within Monterey County north of I-805; these services are not available south of I-805 or east of SR-41A due to lack of funding and infrastructure development opportunities within that corridor focus instead on providing express service between Stanislaus County (north) and Los Angeles County (south). Amtrak provides passenger train service between San Francisco and Los Angeles via Needles Station before terminating at Santa Monica/Highland Park Station; Amtrak also offers freight trains between Stockton/San Joaquin Valley viaTurlock Junction and Sacramento/Arroyo Seco Junction . According to the 2000 U.S Census Bureau report "Census2000: What It All Means",Whittier had a total population of 11,686 living alone, 6,916 with someone over age 65 years living alone (), 2% under 5 years old (), 9% black or African American (), 85% white (). However, the city has since seen an increase in its population again with current numbers standing at over 3,000 people as of 2017.
