Whittier is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 56,813 at the 2010 census. Whittier is located on the east coast of San Diego and borders La Jolla to the south and North Park to the north. It has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cold winters. The first settlement in what would become Whittier was made by Spanish colonists in 1769 as part of Rancho San Buenaventura de la Vieja de las Palomas. In 1821, Mexican nationals founded Rancho Cuyamaca near present-day Donner Pass for economic reasons. This area became known as Rancho Los Nietos because no one could find any new land to sell in return for money from Mexico City! The name change came about because there were now several places called Los Nietos in Southern California! In 1835, Englishman Alfred Deakin bought part of Rancho Los Nietos from Mexican nationals and transferred it to his wife Jeannette Deakin who renamed it Whittier after her native place – White Hart Heath near London! In 1868, James Wickersham acquired title to all of what is today Whittier except for some small sections of undeveloped land that he left undeveloped untilafter World War II when he began developing them into an extensive community with more than 120 homes and businesses! Today’s downtown district anchors much of the commercial heartland of Whittier while also featuring many interesting neighborhoods including Hillcrest Heights, Laurelhurst Gardens/Foothills Estates/Don Juan Trails ( winding streets named after Native American chiefs), Westwood Village/Eastside Highlands/Aliso Viejo Hills (home to many golf courses), La Jolla Heights (nearby beach), Niguel Valley (nearby mountain) and Eastlake Village (home to many art galleries).

It is located on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and has been part of that area for over 100 years. The first permanent settler in Whittier was John Sutter, who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on what is now First Street and Quincey Road. Sutter's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Whittier. Over time, other settlers followed suit and more buildings were erected throughout the town. In 1892, Whittier became an incorporated municipality with a council-manager government under which it had complete control over its own affairs including education, police, fire protection and zoning regulations. The incorporation made possible better coordination between public services and private industry so that Whittier could become one of Southern California's most successful cities during the early 20th century. During World War II, WGIFF Radio station (now KFMB) was established in nearby Westminster to provide programming for American soldiers stationed in Southern California during World War II Radio Relay Service operations from naval stations around the world via short wave radio waves
Whittier was founded in 1879 by John B. Whittier and his wife, Harriet Beecher Stowe. The town is located on the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. In 1919, it merged with neighboring Pasadena to form the city of Pasadena.
