Whittier, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 781 as of 2010. It is part of the San Gabriel Valley and has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. The first European to visit Whittier was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 14, 1769, during his exploration of North America. The town was founded in 1871 by John Davenport and James Moulton Wright after they bought land from David Lloyd Coopers. In 1907, the first gun store in Whittier opened its doors. A year later, the first ammunition store opened as well. In 1911, Mayor George Wickersham dedicated a park in downtown Whittier called Park Row to commemorate all local law enforcement officers who had died in duty since 1891. As time went on, more and more businesses cropped up around Park Row including a post office (1916), bank (1926), movie theater (1928), grocery store (1929), tire shop (1930), and hotel (1945). The last major change to Whittier's landscape came with the arrival of Interstate 5 when it was built into the city limits in 1965. This development spawned many similar projects around town over ensuing years including One Lincoln Place (now occupied by Macy's), South Park Plaza (now occupied by Sears), North Park Plaza (Now occupied by Subway) and much more...the list goes on! Today most of these buildings are either demolished or have been converted into apartments or commercial properties; but certain notable examples such as One Lincoln Place remain essentially unchanged from their original form..

Spanish name for this spot was Isla de las Flores because of numerous flocks of birds that resided there until about 1870 when they were moved to Point Conception because of competition from American settlers and since then, Whittier has had three distinct identities: Mexican (1828-1870), Anglo (1871-1912), and Californian (1913-present). The Mexican period began with Father Francisco Lopez y Arellano's mission San Pedro de Atacama on November 3rd, 1821 which led to what is now known as Mission Row in downtown Whittier. The following year saw beginning development of wharf areas on both sides of the river near Point Conception which would become significant commercial center during early years of California's history despite opposition from American traders who interpreted their presence as an encroachment upon their domain Anglo Period began on July 22nd, 1851 with the proclamation by Ulysses S Grant giving land east of Bronson Creek to Anglos for the construction of a new town site called Fremont Bayou although no such town materialized due to financial difficulties within a few weeks In 1912 developer Harry Jaffray started construction on what would eventually become known as First Hill Shopping Center which fronts Main Street today . This project allowed white people access to shopping districts traditionally reserved for Mexicans or Blacks primarily through opening up urban areas where business could be done without fear or suspicion

The community of Whittier, California was founded in 1868 by John Sutter and his brother, Hiram. The first post office in the community was established in 1870. In 1881, Whittier incorporated as a city. In 1942, the Japanese bombed Whittier during World War II and destroyed most of the city's infrastructure.
