By 1870, there were over fifty mining operations in California including many near Whittier. The early mining industry attracted people from all over Western Europe including Americans who had come looking for wealth beyond their homes. Many people who worked in the early mining industries built their homes around where they worked or within walking distance of their workplaces. Many of these homes are still standing today including some that have been converted into rental units. One such home is located on Hill Street in downtown Whittier which has been preserved as part of the city’s history museum since 1978. Whittier became an important center for business during itsgolden age because it was easy to get transportation to nearby San Francisco and Sacramento due to its location on Route 1 (the contemporaneous National Highway System). Businesses also thrived because there was plenty of cheap labor available due to the abundant natural resources available in this area and lack of competition from other countries adjacent to California during this time period

In 1853, Chihuahua was part of Mexico and not the United States. In 1866, California became a U.S. territory when it was purchased from Mexico. The first post office in Whittier opened in 1875. In 1907, the Whittier School District was created and Whittier became its headquarters.
