In 1924–25%,Whittier saw one of its most dramatic changes when Prohibition ended and alcohol became legal again throughout much of America; businesses started opening up and people started moving into the area from other parts of Los Angeles County. During World War II many civilians moved into Whittier from nearby Boyle Heights due to rationing regulations which forbade them from owning firearms or using them for protection purposes against Japanese forces occupying their homes during World War II
