On November 8th, 1886, Samuel Morse shot an animal with a gun sling in Central Park. On December 7th 1888, W.H. Freeman shot an animal with a gun sling from his balcony in the old Courthouse Building at 4pm while people were inside their building for court proceedings

Whittier is a city in California, United States. It was founded by the Americans on May 6, 1879, as part of the larger San Francisco Bay Area. In 1907, Whittier became an incorporated town. The population was 26,834 at the 2010 census. The first white settlers in what is now Whittier were farmers who began to arrive in 1848 and soon built homes on high ground overlooking Point Reyes National Seashore. They named their new community after William Hogg, an Englishman who had been living in Monterey County for several years and had seen the area that would become Whittier when he visited it in 1849. In 1859, John Cranch moved from Stockton to start a grocery store and post office in what is now downtown Whittier; this became the nucleus of the wharves and warehouses district that developed around it over time. In 1863–64 John Troup surveyed and platographed a township which included present-day Whittier; this was one of many towns platted within Rancho San Rafael Mexican land grant boundaries during the Gold Rush period. On July 13, 1870, school District No. 3 (now School District 5) filed with the county recorder's office to establish a public school system for residents of Rancho San Rafael lands east of Mission Bay; however no action was taken until December 4th when Drury erected his office building on Main Street between Second and Third Streets (now Market Street). A meeting was held at Drury's home on December 8th to consider forming a Board of Education; twelve people attended including four teachers fromDistrict No. 3 who then organized into two classes each January 1st through April 30th 1861 with Mrs. Fenton acting as superintendent...On January 1st 1862 Mrsor Fenton resigned due to ill health & her replacement was Mrs.. Ladd who served until 1865...In 1865 there were three classrooms & one board room inside Drury’s house - today’s Third Street Parking Garage! When Sherman burned down Fort Point during his march across California in October 1868 some citizens used local firewood to rebuild Fort Point Brewery which still stands today just south of Harbor Boulevard East near mile marker 16 on I-5 near Sherman Dam Boulevard; this brewery operated until 1915 On November 11th 1865 Jameson Pemberton registered with The County Recorder's Office “John Pemberton” (no relation) thereby creating a record that significantly increased our knowledge about our early history...From here we can access records from various governmental entities such as: Land Ordinance #2191 dated Dec 4th 1860…1880 map showing lots numbered 1-10 within District 2…1890 map showing Lots numbered 11-20 within District 2…1895 map shows Lots numbered 21-30 within District 2…1907 census listing 26 people living in “Whittiere Township” without any mention of water or schools – pretty amazing considering its only been around since 1865! After losing most if not all their rural property they decided it would be smarter to move closer to cities so they formed another incorporation called Unincorporated Settlement located at current day Railroad Avenue & First street NW corner lot #14 which lasted until 1909 when annexation by Oakland made them into City Limits
