What is now Whittier, California was first settled in 1851 by American Civil War veteran and businessman J.P. Morgan. The city was named for General John C. Fremont, who had supervised the Uprising of November 1849 which ended Mexican rule over California. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and its access to water resources. In 1901, Whittier became part of Los Angeles County and experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for LAX Airport. In 1876 John Lennon bought some property here for $6,000 which he turned into his childhood home called Lennons Ridge after his father Liverpool (1866-1941). In 1922 actress Norma Shearer purchased part of what would become Pico Rivera Park which included a hilltop cemetery where she buried her husband Mickey Rooney (credited as Mickey Rooney). In 1928 rockabilly singer Elvis Presley (1935-1977) married Priscilla Beane (1937-2006), daughter of real estate magnate Vincent Beane who had helped found Paramount Pictures Corporation with his sister Irene Mayer Beane in 1936. They lived at 222 North Hope Street until 1968 when they moved into Graceland which had been built for them adjacent to theManufacturing District where their movie studios were located. During World War II Whittier played host to many military installations including Naval Air Station Miramar which grew out of an Imperial Japanese Navy base that was abandoned during WWI because Japan lacked air power capability; Marine Corps Air Station El Toro which served as a training ground for Marines during WWII; Naval Weapons Facility Point Mugu which manufactured torpedoes used against American ships off southern California; Army Air Forces Base Sylmar responsible for manufacturing B-29s used against Japan during World War II; as well as numerous radar stations throughout Southern California such as Sohio Radar station operated by Onizuka Electric Co., Ltd.. In 1947 poet Maya Angelou purchased land south of Main Street between Third Street and Harbor Drive along Griffith Avenue which she named I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings after Alice Paul’s song about African slavery A Voice from Nowhere . Since then many famous people have resided or worked here such as Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cameron Diaz, Katie Holmes etcetera.. One very famous resident was writer Jarrell Martin who wrote "East LA" based upon his experiences living here while attending USC School Of Law before moving upto Beverly Hills later becoming Editor-in-Chief at Newsweek magazine before dying age 48 from liver cancer at Cedars Sinai Medical Center surrounded by family members on October 6th 2014..

For most of California's history, the area now known as Whittier was part of Rancho San Felipe. The first permanent settler in what is now Whittier County was José María Alvarado, who arrived in 1821. In 1848, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Felipe to Antonio Bolsa de 27 familiares, including Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and José Joaquín Herrera. This grant covered an area that extended from present-day Monterey Peninsula east to the Pacific Ocean. In 1861, prior to the American Civil War, Whittier became a point of origin for arms production for Confederate forces. A rifle plant operated by Elisha Eliot and Company turned out weapons for both sides during the war. After the war ended, many of these plants closed down due to competition from new companies founded in California after the war. In 1882, Carlos Mina acquired all of San Francisco Bay Area's land east of Long Beach and developed it into one large ranch called "Rancho Mexicano" (Spanish for Mexicanranch). As part of this acquisition, Mina transferred ownership of much of Whittier County to Mexico. Mina died in 1888 and his estate passed through several hands before it came into private hands again in 1913. In 1922 it was donated by Edwin Schieffer to become a parkland located adjacent to downtown Los Angeles with gardens and a beachfront observatory providing views over Downtown Los Angeles Harbor. In 1954 it reverted back to public ownership under Statehood laws when CalArts moved its campus there from UCLA.]
