Whittier is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, located on the western edge of the city of Los Angeles. The population was 26,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Bay Area and has been home to many famous people, including writer J.D. Salinger and singer Barbra Streisand. The first known human settlement in what is now Whittier was by members of the Gabrielle Carr family who came overland from San Francisco in 1821. The area that would become Whittier was first inhabited by the Tongva people who used it for fishing and hunting grounds west of present-day downtown Los Angeles. When Mission San Fernando Rey became an Anglo-Dutch mission in 1790, part of Rancho Santa Anita land north of Whittier, some Tongva inhabitants were allowed to stay and create a small community there called Dutch Flat; however, most Tongva left when rancho founder José Maria del Valle bought it in 1827. In 1847, James Irvine built his horse-drawn wagons to carry goods between Monterey and Stockton via what is now Mount Wilson Boulevard (now US 101). Irvine's business became so successful that he decided to move his wagonnery east down Mulholland Drive into what is nowowntown Whittier; this original village had a post office, court house (later converted into a hotel), schoolhouse (now home to Pacific International University), store and two residences - one for Irvine himself and one for his wife Louise Mason – until it burned down in 1851 while under construction. In 1860s maps from early California Geographic Names we see "Witcher" but there are no authenticated records or mentions of this name until after1860s when it appears as part of Rancho San Miguel did which adjoins Rancho San Pedro lands east of Pasadena From here on Records show "Whitton" as being associated with James Ivers & Son Co., mutliples agents through 1870s
There is little known about the history of Whittier, California before it was founded by James W. Whittier in 1876. However, it is likely that the community originated as a post-Gold Rush settlement on the banks of the San Gabriel River. The first permanent resident in what is now Whittier was John Haughton, who arrived in 1879 and named his new community after himself. By 1890, there were over 100 people living in Whittier and it had a school and library. In 1907, the town incorporated as a city under the name of Los Angeles.
