However, after much deliberation they decided to sell instead and move downriver to present day San Bernardino County where they would continue farming goods such as flowers and lumber while awaiting word from upstream that they might have won the lottery! It wasn't until 1886 when they finally received word that they had been chosen as one of four members of a group who would build a new town on top of Mt Whitney –Whittier! It wasn't long before business began growing at WHITTIER THE VILLAGE – so much so that by 1897 it had outgrown its initial home on Mount Whitney! By 1902, however, things were starting to heat up atWHITTIER…the population had reached 3200 residents! This increasing population necessitated more space so a second building was erected on Whitworth Street between First Street and Main Street only two years later (1906). This addition served as both a grocery store but also became known as "The White House" because it housed both local officials (such as Mayor George Eastman) who hosted social events during town meetings or county fairs while also providing accommodation for visiting dignitaries! In 1912 another addition was made to WHITTIER with the construction of an opera house which still stands today within sightseeing possibilities for all visitors alike! In 1915 WHITTIER TOWN BUREAU was established with Mrs Lillie Olsen serving as its first Director/CEO. During her tenure, WHITTIER experienced rapid growth including annexations from neighboring towns like West Covina (1915), Garden Grove (1920), North Hollywood (1925), Sylmar (1927) & Carson City (1928)! eventually becoming incorporated into Placer County effective January 1st 1931 !!! As Placer County grew more complicate due to annexation by other counties following World War II additional offices were needed such as Fire Marshal(1945), Sheriff(1950), Tax Collector(1970), etc………..all without diminishing or eliminating services offered within WHITTIER ITSELF!! Despite these added responsibilities over time some aspects always remained consistent within our community such as our annual Christmas lights display which has been held annually since 1951 !! !!!!!!!!!
