The town's original name was Alhambra until it was changed in 1857 because Spanish colonists had called the peninsula "Almirante" while they resided there. In 1865, Jens Jacobsen established a sawmill here which became one ofLos Angeles' earliest commercial businesses and remain so today with over 150 employees (the largest employer outside downtown Los Angeles). One early resident mentioned that "the mill hands worked nine hours a day without rest", providing evidence for claims by some historians that mills were a keystay of early industrial development in Southern California. A new courthouse and jail were built shortly thereafter and soon after residents started referring to their town as "Whittier." The increased population growth during post-World War II decades resulted in more housing being erected along Route 1 including many bungalows suburban style becoming popular throughout Northern California following World War II boom times but none similar within Southern California at this time; this led to attempts during the 1960s by then Mayor Brown opposed by then City Councilmember Herb Kapler Jr., himself Californian born son of German immigrants (Kapler later became mayoralty candidate) unsuccessfully to annex neighboring cities such as Carson City into Whittier making it one urban center inside Greater Los Angeles proper despite opposition from other mayors across LA at that time: these efforts failed even though annexation plans did gain support from state legislators prior to his death prior thereto).
