He named this land Rancho San Antonio de la Cañada de Santa Clara y Los Algodones which encompassed what are now some of downtown Whittier and parts of its eastern edge including present day Scotchtown park and parts of Bob Hope Park. That year Edward Cevallos came across the offer and bought 4 acres (1 ha) near where Lower Main Street meets Seventh Street for $10 per acre ($2/hip). This began what would be known as Cevallos' Farm which later included over 100 acres (40 ha) including much of today's downtown area. Cevallos started out as an amateur astronomer using primitive equipment he had acquired from friends or borrowed from members of his community college astronomy club or purchased secondhand from other astronomers during observing season at Mt Shasta Lake in Northern California... In 1876 he erected a wooden telescope at his farmhouse which finally gave him access to those extraordinary views back east that he had been longing to see since 1849." From humble beginnings Cevallos built himself into an important figure within Whittier society becoming treasurer (1892-1907), president (1912-1914) and manager (1920-1925) of City Hall; director/founder/director emeritusof Elks Lodge No. 621; vice president (1900), city councillor (1920-1924), supervisor—now Mayor—of Recreation District No. 2; member UPNP board 1945-1950; delegate Frome Valley Republican Committee 1948 presidential election campaign national chair 1950 - 1952; honorary life member Socorro Legionnaires Post #5 1951 & 1955

Whittier, California is a small city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 22,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is included in the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Whittier comes from two settlements: Westwood Village and East Whittier. The first European to visit what is now Whittier was Spanish conquistador Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1477. He named it "Mendoza" after his captain Diego Mendoza who had guided him to this point on his way back from Menomonee Lake. After Visita de la Galápolis in 1542, Spain claimed all of Alta California for their King Philip II of Spain. In 1795, Mexico acquired Alta California through Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended Mexican War of Independence and unified most of what are now Southern California with Mexico as its new nation. After Mexican independence, many Americans came to Alta California looking for land grants and ranching opportunities during the Gold Rush period (1848-1853). Many ranchers who received grants became wealthy by Operating Ranchos Nuevos (New ranches) which were started by prospectors in large areas such as Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Tejon and Rancho Sinaloa within Californias expansive Central Valley region with potential claims northward into Oregon and Idaho Territory then eastward into Nevada Territory before Rio Bravo closed off much future settlement possibilities due to water shortages caused by surface runoff from mountains to the south surrounding Los Angeles Harbor including present day Huntington Beach Peninsula which became known as downtown Los Angeles after railroads bypassed it at that time
In 1821, the United States of America was founded and California became part of its new nation. The area now known as Whittier was first inhabited by the Ohlone people, who lived near the present-day city of Los Angeles. In 1847, Mexican settlers arrived in what is now Whittier and began to build homes. A smallpox epidemic in 1848 killed many of these settlers, and so a dispensary was established to help those affected by the disease. In 1850, the town became a post office with the name Whittier. In 1865, when California attained statehood, it passed an act annexing Cahuilla County to becomeWhittier County. The county seat moved from Los Angeles to Whittier in 1887.
