Whittier, California is a small town located in the Coachella Valley of Southern California. The population was 5,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Whittier were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals for food. In 1821, whaling ships arrived in San Diego Bay, bringing alcohol with them and causing a problem for the nascent village that already had problems with crime and drunkenness. A group of men led by captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on Point Conception in 1826 to protect their new settlement from raiders which continued until 1827 when Mexico pulled out of California. During the Mexican War (1846-48), Whittier sided with Mexico, but when war came they sided with United States forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. After Mexican independence was gained, American settlers began arriving and by 1850 there were over 100 people living in Whittier including 20 Revolutionary War veterans who had come down from Northern California to help fight against Spain. The fort continued to be used as an arsenal until 1865 when it was sold to railroad companies who turned it into a training ground for locomotive engineers before demolishing it in 1886. In 1907, Whittier voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Los Angeles County because they considered themselves "a separate community" within county boundaries despite not having been annexed yet. On November 3rd 1909 Los Angeles County officially took over responsibility for Whittier from its original owners including 10% of all property value so that everyone could move into newly developed areas such as Pasadena and Hollywood while still retaining their ancient Indian rights which are still exercisable today through local organizations such as the Humboldt Club (founded 1886). The post office established at 7th and Sancroft Streets in 1881 became one of the largest in California with its first issue of mail ever sent out from Whittier. In 1907 issue #5 of "California Magazine" reported that “Whittier has been my home all my life”; while living here as an infant I was given to an aunt who lived near by at Seventh Street and Mission Road; she took me back East to live with her after our family moved back West when I was three years old. When I was sixteen years old my father died suddenly so I lost everything but for my clothes which I fortunately never wore outside because as soon as you start wearing clothes people will think you are important or something which made me very happy because without clothes no one can tell whether you are a boy or girl […] So long ago this happened that if today some rich man found out about it he would probably give me a big sum of money for nothing more than seeing me wear clothes again!” – children's poem about their move from Mexico
