Whittier was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and Richter H. Winters as a small, unincorporated community located on the San Gabriels near Monterey Bay. The history of Whittier can be traced back to 1879 when Colonel John Sutter came up the coast looking for land to settle after being discharged from his service in Mexico. He landed at what is now Whittier on July 26th of that year. He named the area "Winthrop" in honor of General James Wilkinson who had led American forces against Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Colonel Sutter also built a small Fortification here to protect himself and his settlers from Native American attacks. The first people to live in Whittier were some men working for Captain William Richardson onshore at Point Conception (now Isla Vista). They started building their homes around 1881 using logs brought overland by Richardson from Northern California's wine country. By 1886, there were about 25 houses in town; however, only 10 were occupied daily because of lack of space or transportation available locally or along the Coast Highway. In 1905, when Whittiere became an incorporated city, it had a population of just under 3200 residents living within its borders - making it one of California's smaller cities at that time! It wasn't until 1920 that downtown began becoming developed as business districts sprang up around both sides of Main Street between First and Second Streets; this coincided with growth around Point Conception Naval Air Station which was then serving as an important military facility for whaling operations off Southern California during World War I (1914-1918). Today, Whittier is home to more than 120000 residents within its boundaries – making it one of Californias largest cities!
