Westminster, California is a town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 16,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Carson and Inglewood counties. Westminster was incorporated in 1876. The town site was patented to James Fenton in 1879. The first settler in what is now Westminster was John Wesley Powell who explored the San Fernando Valley and Kern River region for new land for the Gold Rush of 1849-50. He named his discovery "Powell's Diggings", after himself and his son George Washington Powell (1802-1875). In 1861, Jameson Halleck founded Halleck & Company mercantile business in Westminster with Wm. Atherton as his partner; this company became known as Halleck & Company Western Mercantile Agency (HW&CWA). In 1870, Wm. Stirling bought interest in HW&CWA from Halleck & Company's original partners Jno.[1] In 1888, Leland Stanford organized two private companies - East Palo Alto Railroad (EPAR) and Central Pacific Railroad (CP) - to build a transcontinental railroad between Sacramento and Las Vegas through the Central Valley of California; these companies were merged into Union Pacific Railway (UP) when it acquired CP on November 4, 1912. UP later sold EPAR to Metroland District Lines Inc., which took over EPAR operations on October 1, 1984. On December 11th 1978 the last passenger train service operated by EPAR ended at Willowbrook Station west of Pasadena due to Amtrak abandonment of that line following their merger with Regional Air Lines Corporation (RAILROADCORPORATION). In 1899 Harry Smedley purchased 750 acres east of present day Westminster from Jno Copley for $5,000; he renamed it Giddings Ranch after one of his brothers John Giddings and built a ranch house here called Giddings Manor which still stands today within sight of downtown Los Angeles across from Pioneer Elementary School.) On May 24th 1901 Smedley sold this ranch block east of present day Westmont Drive to Pemberton & Co.; this company would eventually become part of city services such as Waterfront Commission until it went out of business in 1951 without leaving any Legacy behind! On July 8th 1902 Leland Stanford donated land comprising parts of what is now Westmont Drive and South Park Avenue northwest/southwest corner adjacent to Pershing Avenue northeast corner adjoining First Street between those streets being part Of City Streets And Also Contains Sites Of Parks Including Greenwood Cemetery Which Is Located wholly Within Limits Containing An area Of Over One Hundred Acres necropolis also Included hereinbeing described under said boundaries bounded by North Park Avenue Northeast Corner To Pershing Avenue Northwest Corner To First Street thence southwesterly along said lines To meeting point With Present Day Westmont Drive!) This donation would allow people living around downtown Los Angeles access to some prime real estate near downtown! In 1905 Leland Stanford donated another tract totaling 172 acres just east off Interstate 405 between Redondo Beach Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard becoming known as Alma Mater Hills Preserve; this donation would help future students attend nearby University Of Southern California! On February 14th 1906 Charles Wiltse donated 122 acres southeast off I-405 just past Antelope Peak Road becoming known as Glen Canyon Dam Preserve...This donation allowed development closer to LAX airport making it easier for people commuting into Downtown Los Angeles! After World War II many small businesses closed down due primarily to high taxes levied by then state Governor Edmund Egan Jr.. These businesses included: Kegel’s Brewery which closed its doors on September 28th 1948 due largely to its inabilityTo compete against newly opened Sam Adams Brewery next door),[2],[3],[4]the hardware store Old Dominion Hardware,[5]and finally Tim Horton's Coffee shop which closed its doors August 5th 1949 because they could not compete against newly opened Starbucks Coffee Shop next door)! Some small businesses that remained open during the war include: Progressive Auto Glass,[6],[7],[8],[9],Sears Roebuck(now Sears Holdings)[10],and Hollywood Casino.[11][12] However most businesses closed because there simply wasn't enough demand for their products or services during wartime whenLos Angeles was fighting an all out war effort with both Axis powers Japan AND America!! After the war many small businesses reopened but many were lost again becauseofthe high taxes levied post-war !! Today only 2 remaining [13]:Tim Hortons coffee shop[14][15],and Hollywood Casino[16].

Westminster is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. It is the seat of Kern County and was founded on January 15, 1864, by men from Tulare County. The population was 17,479 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westminster were fur traders and missionaries in 1824. A post office called Westminster was established in 1853, but it did not take off until 1865 when John Wesley Borah became the first mayor of Westminster. The city's current name came about when it became part of Kern County after its incorporation on November 3, 1923. In 1927, Kern County voters passed a resolution adopting the name "Westminster" for both cities combined. At that time, only Kern City had an official name while Westminster Township had just been formed within the city limits. In 1938, Mayor Harry Waring created a Municipal Court which focused exclusively on traffic matters and renamed it "First Judicial District Court". On October 1st of that year there was an election which saw incumbent Mayor James Sisko lose to challenger Harry Walters by 263 votes out of over 675 cast (Waring would later win reelection). On September 26th 1939--the day after World War II began--the City Council designated itself as a military area pursuant to then-City Ordinance No. 9894 providing for such designation should any hostilities occur within the boundaries of Kern County during this conflict; at this time all other municipal governments were considered non-military areas subject to normal council business and operations without regard to military status or implications. On October 2nd 1943 Mayor Waring announced his candidacy for Governor against Republican nominee Edwin Paull Jr., becoming one of only two Westfield mayors ever to run for statewide office twice (the other being formermayor/currentcity controller Dan Quayle). However he lost both elections handily and never ran again for public office; he died in 1991 at age 90 years old while still living in Westfield proper
