In 1887, one of the first optical accessories stores in the United States was opened in Westminster, California. The store was run by Julius Caesar Semon and his wife Isabella. At that time, there were only a few westerners who knew about photography and optics. Julius Caesar imported many of the best lenses from Germany and Italy to sell at his store. In 1927, Julius Caesar passed away and his widow continued running the store until her death in 1945. She bequeathed her business to her son-in-law, Irving Kline Jr., who ran it until its sale in 1978 to The British Optical Company Ltd. In 1948, The British Optical Company Ltd. sold their assets to American Optoelectronics Corporation (AOEC). AOEC operated the business until it went out of business in 1984. During its history, AOEC has been involved in a number of important technological advances for optical products including developing early color video equipment; developing digital photo storage technology; creating lasers for scanning microscopes; and producing highspeed photographic filmstocks used by commercial photographers around the world. Some of these advancements have led directly to new technologies being developed today such as photoelectronic cameras and laser scanners which use light instead of electricity or batteries for data capture and image processing

In Westminster, California, the first optical equipment store was founded in 1912 by Harry and Fannie Weiss. The Weiss Optical Store catered to a primarily German-American clientele. In 1916, the Weiss family sold their business to Julius Rosenwald and his brother Solomon Rosenwald.solomonrosenwald&Company became one of the largest optical manufacturers in the United States. In 1941, Rosenwald donated his entire fortune to the University of California at Berkeley for its fledgling School of Optometry and Eye Research. The gift increased UC Berkeley's endowment by $100 million (now $2 billion). Over ensuing years, Rosenwald's name would be associated with some of America's most famous optical institutions such as UCLA, UC Irvine, Stanford University and MRC Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Manchester University.
