Gun targets have been a part of the history of Westminster, California for many years. The first target was erected in 1873 by W. H. Berry and Sons, a gunnery company that operated out of the old Fort Telluride post on the northside of the city. The company manufactured rifle and pistol targets at its shop on Third Street between Mission and Guerrero Streets. The Berry Targets were replaced by gunsights in 1903 when Wernher von Braun designed and installed the first YMCA Gun Training Range in Westminster. In 1935, City Council decided to install a permanent gun range within city limits after seeing an increase in shootings around town. That same year, Mayor Hugh Condon authorized the purchase of two used guns from JPL Corporation to be used as targets on City-owned land near Twelfth Street and Sacramento Avenue South. In 1951, City Council passed an ordinance amending zoning regulations to allow for shooting galleries within city limits. This change allowed businesses such as movie theaters and department stores to create indoor ranges where customers could shoot handguns outdoors during movie screenings or special events. In 1966, City Council passed an ordinance authorizing concealed handgun permit holders to possess firearms while firing targets at gun ranges inside or outside their homes or businesses provided they register with local police departments before doing so (the regulation still applies today). In 1992, Mayor Harry Reid announced his intent to declared all city streets “gun-free zones” in order to reduce firearm crime statewide (this policy has since been rescinded). At that time, Westminster had over 200 Target Archers who competed annually against other cities across California in competitions held at various locations throughout downtown Los Angeles County each November; these days only shotguns are allowed for competition purposes without pistols due to concerns about malfunctioning rifles). In 2003, Target Archers merged with California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) resulting in a more unified target shooting community across state lines which continues today through CRPA's National Championship Competitions program at various venues around country including Reno Nevada this past weekend celebrating our centenary!

The first Europeans to visit what is now Westminster were Spanish explorers in 1769–70 when they explored and charted the Sacramento Valley. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico began granting land grants to American settlers west of the Rio Grande as part of their claim for territory won at Battle of Monterrey that year. In 1828, a group of Anglo-Americans founded ranches near present-day Westminster during Rancho calles era cattle drives from northern California overland from March 14 until September 10 each year. One such drive led to the discovery of gold nearpresent-day Menlo Park on January 24, 1849 by prospector George Cosme and his partners and named it Gold Rush because its location seemed promising for rich gold veins. In 1861, after more than 50 years as an unincorporated community within rancho boundaries, Westminster became a city with a population of 634 when it annex ed neighboring Menlo Park proper (now Palo Alto) via incorporation ordinance on November 5, 1871; but despite this increased population size no new housing developments were built until after World War II when newly developed areas adjacent to campus proximate thereto necessitated expanded student housing noted above). However even prior to these expansions much architecture could be found scattered throughout some 4 square miles surrounding only two blocks east or west of Main Street between First Street’s wide expanse on one side and Pioneer Boulevard’s narrow width on the other (. . .)
