Westminster is a small town in Alameda County, California. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of San Francisco Bay and has been part of the same community since 1847. The first people to live in what is now Westminster were Spanish mission traders who came ashore from Manila in 1776 and named it Rancho Cotimepec after their patron saint, Saint Dominic. They also built a small mission chapel there in 1778 but abandoned it soon after due to Indian attacks. In 1847, American settlers arrived in what is now Westminster and began working on ranching land that would Eventually become known as East Palo Alto. In 1865, they founded the Town of Westminster which became an incorporated town on February 14th of that year with a population of 147 residents. On November 5th 1886, the City of Fremont was organizedophy through incorporation by vote of residents of both towns with a population exceeding 1,000 residents living within two miles (3 kilometers). This period saw great growth for both communities as they amalgamated into one municipality under state law. In 1916, when California became a state, Westminster became its seat and continued to grow rapidly until it reached its current size with over 2,500 residents in 1980s. All this growth led to many infrastructure improvements such as new schools and streets being constructed including State Route 101 which currently runs through downtown making it easy to get around without ever leaving your neighborhood!
