Westminster is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,643 at the 2010 census. Westminster was founded on November 7, 1851 by pioneers of the Rancho Cucamonga chain of townships. It became part of Los Angeles County on January 3, 1959. The first post office in Westminster was established in 1853, and the first house built there was the home of Wm. Fenton and his family. A local sawmill caught fire in 1861 and destroyed much of what had been erected around it; but within a few years new lumber yards had sprung up all over town to take advantage of this new development. In 1865 the first school opened in what is now downtown Westminster under charter from the Board of Education for Los Angeles County (now known as history buffs might remember that this school served grades 1-12). In 1870s two other pioneer families – James Witherspoon and John Hutton – moved into town and started two more stores: Hutton’s grocery store on Main Street (founded 1865) and Jno. & Sallie Goodrich’s general store (1871). The good times didn’t last long though; by 1883 both stores were gone due to tough competition from larger businesses coming online with mechanization advancements which undercut their prices substantially. Somehow or another something happened between 1881 when Leland Stanford purchased some land adjacent to present day Highland Avenue SW for $5 per acre ($50 million today), incorporated it into Palo Alto Township on February 14, 1886 with 527 citizens living therein according to original plat map filed March 15th 1886; then changed name to “Westminster Township” effective July 1st 1888 because they found no one living there except Indians who wererespresenting themselves as “Palo Alto American Indian Tribe” so they re-filed map April 17th 1888 changing name again effective September 6th 1889 back to Westminster after finally finding someone living there! So much for progressivism being our party line….. Anyway moving along…… In 1898 when he developed Menlo Park into an enclave separate from Palo Alto proper he decided that since he only needed about 3000 residents near him there would be no need for a township so Menlo Park became its own autonomous village called Redwood City which lasted until 1915 when Palo Alto annexed Redwood City as well creating one big city!!! funny thing is that Redwood City never really recovered economically after becoming part of Palo Alto while Menlo Park continued to prosper even thriving during WWII thanks largely to Dutch Westfall who managed it during World War II until his death suddenly leaving it bankrupt just like most other small towns throughout America!!!!!! All kidding aside though I think we can all agree that if Leland Stanford ever did manage To buy all those trees west of El Monte he would have had an estate less than one percent size fractionally smaller than ancient redwoods outside Emeryville!!!!!
