Westminster, California is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 16,684 at the 2010 census. Westminster is located on the southern edge of Kern County and north of Bakersfield. It is bordered by Tulare to the east, Visalia to the south and northeast, Chico to the northwest and Porterville to the west. The area now known as Westminster was first settled in 1853 by prospectors from New Mexico Territory who found gold near what is now Bakersfield. A post office called Westminster was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1907. The town was named after Sir John Wilde Westmacott, 1st Baronet (1802-1871), an English gentleman who had purchased Rancho Rinconada from Mexican soldiers during the Mexican-American War. In 1912, a group of investors bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land northeast of present-day Westminster for $5 per acre ($ Today it would be $10). They founded what became Kern Valley Electric Company which served customers until 1957 when it merged with Southern California Edison Company forming Los Angeles Edison Company Limited (LEE). In 1927 LEE acquired Western Electric Company which made electricity available throughout western Kern County for people and businesses at cost effective rates that were lower than other providers then or later. In 1929 Wernher von Braun began working on Project Redstone at Doheny Airport outside downtown Los Angeles; his goal was to improve air travel by developing rockets for use by United States military forces overseas during World War II. He designed two prototypes: one flew successfully on July 17, 1939 as part of Operation code name "Antoinette", becoming perhaps LA's first successful aerial launch; while another failed test flight on October 5th same year ended with both pilots killed due to excessive heat caused by engine failure
