West Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 25,701 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Sacramento County afterSacramento. The area that would become West Sacramento was first settled by the Ohlone people about 12,000 years ago. In 1848, Rancho San Carlos was granted to John Sutter and his brother-in-law Manuel Castro for their part in helping to surmount the great Mexican resistance against American expansion west of the Sierra Nevada. Because of this and other grants and donations from ranchers and others associated with Sutter's Gold Rush days, portions of what is now West Sacramento were included within Rancho San Carlos until 1870 when it became part of the larger Rancho Putnam grant given to Francis Drake by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1872, George Wickersham took over management of Rancho San Carlos from Wickersham’s father-in-law John Bigelow. Bigelow had been proprietor since its inception on March 15th, 1851. At least three trees mark where Bigelow parked his adobe wagon near present day First Street and G streets when he arrived in town on April 22nd looking for water rights for his new ranch: Old firewood stand #8 (now south side First Street), post office building #3 (now east side First Street), and brick wall built around an old manhole cover near Second Street corner with G Streets which still exists today as part of Historical Western District Park’s playground equipment! According to legend, during a drought year (1892) God sent down a floodwaters so deep they overflowed Grant Avenue between 1st & 2nd Streets creating Bear Creek which runs through much of present day West Sacramento today - creating one more irrigation ditch needed on then already rich agricultural land! What began as two small towns quickly grew into one large city thanks largely to olive oil production starting in 1907 – making West Sacramento one of America’s leading olive oil producers until 1971! By 1920 there were over 30 businesses operating in downtownWest Sac; many still operate today including three banks plus several dozen restaurants etc., all within easy walking distance from each other...the only thing lacking was a library! That didn't take long though; The City Council erected their first library building just east of Main Streetwhich opened in 1923! It wasn't until 1945 that Voters placed restrictions upon property development calling for limits on new buildings exceeding 2 stories high with no more than ten stories total without minimum setback; adding that “no storefront or commercial structure may be erected taller than sixteen feet above street level without special permission from both Mayor and City Council”!!! With limited zoning flexibility available at that time due to military buildups nearby notables such as Jack London Square just north & east OF Downtown/City Hall (& adjacent Foothills Mall), local businessmen soon responded with architecture designed solely for retail engaging primarily in automobile sales instead of libraries becoming an increasingly rare occurrence!! After World War II wound down there were even fewer restrictions placed upon business growth but again a distinct scarcity developed leading some entrepreneurs to once again seek out greater flexibility via Special Use Permits!! One early exampleof this type occurred when jeans manufacturer Levi Strauss & Co., Incorporated constructed its world headquarters () opposite current day Chico State University campus across Chico Boulevard from Pioneer Avenue) !! This important move led directly to later expansions into east Contra Costa County (!)) as well as Riverside County (& Corona del Mar) !! In 1849, when the United States acquired California from Mexico, it was clear that the land would need to be divided. The eastern half of California was acquired by President Fillmore and given to New York as a part of the Mexican cession. The western half of California was acquired by General Mariano Vallejo and given to Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The first settlers in what is now West Sacramento were Confederate soldiers who had fought in the American Civil War. Afterward, they started farming and developed a town named after them called West Sacramento. In 1872, they founded what is now known as Northern Pacific Railroad Company’s headquarters which still stands today on Second Street in West Sacramento. This company played an important role in early west Sacramento history by providing goods and services for settlers and businesses alike. Since then, West Sacramento has gone through many changes but its roots remain strong. It has seen growth both within its own community and throughout western California. Today, it is home to a number of businesses including government agencies such as City Hall and Water Department; educational institutions such as Southeastern Community College; military installations like Fort Braggand Camp Pendleton; and various cultural attractions like the old courthouse building on Third Street which houses a museum about local history. The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1769, who named it San Salvador. The area was part of Mexican territory until 1821 when it became part of California. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, Sacramento came into conflict with Santa Clara County because Sacramento wanted to secede from California. At this time, most of what is now Sacramento was in Alameda County. In 1852, the American Party won control of California and abandoned its plans for a state within Mexico. As a result, all land east of Sierra Nevada had to be ceded to the United States by January 1st, 1853. This left Sacramento as Californias only city on an eastern side of the mountains. OnJanuary 15th, 1862 – just two years after becoming Californias capital – Mayor John Sutter designated downtowns along First and Second streets as "National Capitol District" and ordered that no buildings anywhere in town be used for public purposes save City Hall and City Council Chambers. On April 14th 1865, at 4 PM while many people were gathered around City Hall waiting for General Ulysses S Grant'sachment orders which never arrived because he had been killed earlier that day in a skirmish near Bear River Ranch northeast of town - Mayor Sutter announced that his administration would henceforth use Fort Point instead because it was closer to City Hall and could house military troops without drawing attention from across the river which local residents knew would happen if they tried to build anything else close by their homes (this fortification lasted until 1909). Sutter's proclamation is generally considered one of the first signs that Downtown Sacramento had become an important commercial center following Reconstruction in America
