West Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 31,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Sacramento County after Roseville. The West Sacramento area was first populated by the Ohlone people and then by the Cahuilla people before becoming part of Rancho Grande de la Basura Mexican land grant given to Carlos Antonio Valencia in 1853. In 1875, West Sacramento became part of what was then known as the City of Sacramento. The town began to grow when ranching operations established themselves here and new businesses opened up such as a bank and a grocery store. A fire destroyed most of downtown business on July 6, 1896, but did not damage any residences or homes within the city limits. The first post office called "West Sacramento" opened in 1865; it moved to its current location in 1876. In 1907, voters passed an ordinance creating City Hall which served as the seat for government until 1978 when Roseville took over that function from City Hall. The original architecture of City Hall is still visible today including parts of theoriginal council chambers and clocktower (which remains operational). Post offices were discontinued around 1911 due to high postal rates charged by Western Union at that time; however they remain extant as historical artifacts on 9th Street North between Buchanan and Sutter Streets. In 1922, West Sacramento annexed adjacent portions of Citrus Heights south of I-5 which increased its population by 10%. Two years later annexation included much of Diamond Bar eastward reaching all the way to SR 805 near Pico Boulevard (now west side streets Indian School Road and Ventura Boulevard) annexing 5% off all property taxes for each householder who also resided within 200 feet thereof with no compensation received from those living eastward beyond SR 805/I-5 boundaries at that time! This annexation totally cut off Diamond Bar fromeastside development so much so that East Diamond Bar developed primarily around SR 805/I-5 instead! Today East DiamondBar has about 26% residential properties opposed to nearly 100% commercial properties located within I-5 or SR 805 boundaries! Another annexation occurred in 1984 which encompassed much of present day South San Joaquin Valley including portions now inside Davis Municipal Airport boundary

West Sacramento is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 27,868 at the 2010 census. It is named for the Sacramento River, which forms its eastern border. The first permanent settler in what would become West Sacramento was George Preuss in 1848. He homesteaded on the east side of the river and named his settlement after his friend and mentor, James Kapp (1812-1865). Kapp had founded Rancho Petaluma just south of present day West Sacramento in 1847. The name "Sacramento" referred to both Kapp's ranch and to the ancient capital of China - Pei-t'ing (modern Sichuan Province), where Chinese traders had settled before arriving in California. In 1861, John Fenton bought land southeast of present day West Sacramento from David Price and began construction on what would become known as Fenton's Millrace Dam. The millrace diverted water from the waters flowing through Lake Oroville into local creeks and then into the Sacramento River itself. This dam greatly enhanced irrigation capabilities for western Inyo County by creating an artificial lake that could be filled with water at any time during summer rains to guarantee short natural drying periods during winter months when crops were grown; it also allowed for easier transportation of goods between East Desert villages downstream and central Valley cities upstream
The area now known as West Sacramento was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who sighted land along the Sacramento River in 1542. A year later, Spanish missionaries arrived and began missionary work in what is now California. In 1788, Mexican nationalists led by José Joaquín de Arguelles claimed California for Mexico. This claim was rejected by the United States, and in 1848 California became a part of the United States. In 1851, Gold Rush fever sweeping through Northern California caused large numbers of people to head downriver to find gold. The town of West Sacramento formed around this time and quickly grew into a busy commercial center with foundry and smelter operations as well as warehouses and residences. West Sacramento experienced several waves of prosperity during its early years but eventually fell victim to a number of busts and depressions throughout the 20th century. However, recent investments have revived local businesses and population growth has begun to reverse some of the negative trends seen in the past two decades or so.
