In 1871–72, gold prospectors discovered gold near present-day Del Norte Boulevard and Empire Avenue in downtown West Sacramento. This led to an influx of settlers who began working on the nearby farms that became known as Gold Country. The town's first post office opened in 1873; by 1905, it had grown to 1,500 residents with a hospital and five churches. During World War II (1939–1945), when many civilians were displaced by Japan's bombing raids over Northern California, many refugees settled in West Sacramentans homes including some who helped found UC Berkeley (1895).
