West Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California. The population was 43,860 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Sacramento County after Rancho Cordova. West Sacramento has a large Latino community and is also home to many businesses and organizations that support Latinos in their local communities. The area now known as West Sacramento was first inhabited by the Anasazi people who lived there from before 1000 BC up until about 1800 AD. The first white surveyor to visit what is now West Sacramento was James Fenton in 1824. He named it for his Scottish friend, John Cressell of Nilesboro, Maine, who had accompanied him on his surveying trip through California. In 1869, George Hearst founded the American Pacific Railroad near present day East End Road and Main Street in what is now part of Downtown West Sacramento. The town was named Hearstville after him because it was within blocks of where he built his new train station which served as headquarters for the railroad company. In 1907, when Crocker Park Cemetery opened, parts of downtown west of First Street were included within its boundaries although they still remain outside of City limits today (except for a small section east of Second Street). That same year saw the opening of WSU's new campus on Sixth Avenue northwest of First Street just south of Interstate 5th Way - making it one block east from Crocker Park Cemetery! In 1916 WSU moved into new $3 million buildings on Cowles Drive between I-5th Way and 12th Street NW across from Raley Field/US Air Force Base! On October 1st 1961 West Sacaton became an independent city with a mayor and City Council elected at-large instead of being partisanly divided into wards like other cities in California then or later! On November 3rd 1953 voters approved an amendment to the City Charter which stated: "West Sacaton shall be separate from but equal to any other municipality within this State without regard to race or color." This ordinance repealed all priorCity Council Unitary Authority charters including those dating back to 1861! Today's west side includes much older residential areas such as Goldendale Heights (the oldest continuously occupied neighborhood in western WesternSacaton), Midtown South (mid-sized commercial district centered around Third and Fourth Streets), Highland Gardens (a popular shopping center featuring upscale retailers along Indianola Avenue) and more recent neighborhoods such as Riverbend Oaks & Lakeshore Estates located just northeast off Interstate 5th Way across from Golden Gate Park & Central Park BART Station

In 1857, Jedediah Cowlitz set out from Fort Point on the American River to find a place to build himself a cabin and ranch. He found that there was already an established community in his area - West Sacaton Creek - which he named after himself and his parents (WestSacaton Creek refers to both Jedediah Cowlitz and Rancho San Joaquin). By 1861, most of present-day Downey had also arrived and began construction on their homes and businesses around the mouth of Downey Creek. INEVITABLE INTEREST IN RANCHO CAIRO FOR FOREIGN INVESTORS led to growth in this unincorporated area during the late 1800s as foreign traders started traveling through California looking for agricultural lands they could purchase or sell off piecemeal. A post office called "Rancho Cairo" opened at its current location on November 17th, 1892; it served residents within downriver District 3 until January 1st, 1898 when it became part of District 10 with all other residents located within District 9B northward along I-5 As early as 1870s gold discoveries were being made at Sutter’s Mill just southwest of where today’s town would be built later that decade by James Waddell & Son – one such discovery resulted in George Hearn purchasing 300 acre parcel containing what is now popularly known as “Hearn Gulch” which included some portion or all of present day west Sacaton creek watershed This parcel ended up becoming Hearn sale property extending into present day west Sacramento County Mining operations continued throughout much of this century with various claims resulting in more than $6 million worth recoveries having been made prior to 1906 For many years Gold fever ran high throughout much OF Western US but since endGold rush many people have moved awayFROM RANCHO CAIRO

The city of West Sacramento was founded on December 12, 1851 by J.B. Payne and Wm. H. Teague as the California City of Sacramento. The site of present-day West Sacramento was purchased from the Chasen family in 1853 and became part of the newly formed County of California in 1856. In 1859, the town hall and jail were built in what is now downtown West Sacramento and were used until 1905 when they were replaced by the current structure. On July 8, 1860, a group of fourteen westerners met at Sacramento's State Capitol to create a new state government for California and organized as the Provisional Government of California which lasted until September 17, 1861 when it was disbanded by Governor John Brougham after he failed to receive recognition from Mexico City as the new Mexican government did. In 1862, James Weaver moved his general store from Sacramento to what is now downtownWest Sacramento following the Uprising of June 20th that year which saw many stores closed along with Weaver's business being one of those affected. By 1865, there had been over sixty businesses operating in downtownWestSacramento with most continuing operations through 1870 when they were all closed due to fire suppression efforts led by Captain George Aiken who also served as Mayor during this time period. On November 6, 1870, voters approved an ordinance establishing a city charter with 50% male suffrage which would later be amended to include women on January 1st, 1893. On February 26th 1898 William Fenton was appointed Mayor effective date based on recommendations made by Councilmember Fenton who also served as Vice President during this time period while mayor Michael Moriarty filled out some unexpired terms left vacant at that point in history - becoming only second person ever so honored after Thomas Murchison who held office from 1886-1892 inclusive). On May 14th 1902 James Weaver died suddenly leaving behind four sons - Benjamin (born October 25th 1888), Harry (born March 11th 1890), Clifford (born December 4th 1895) and Edwin Logue (born April 5th 1897). This event marks onlythe third time such a death has occurred within twenty five years within any municipality located within east San Bernardino County - predecessor cities being Riverside County(1895-1903)and Westminster (1905-2007). On November 10th 1907 Mayor Moriarty announced plans for constructionof a $250K public works project intended to improve infrastructure including paving streets throughout town center along with The Western Union Telegraph Building which would become home to both Telephone Company and first Western Union location west of Interstate 10 before it closed its doors permanently in 1961.. At that point wire services had already relocated their offices southwestward away from Downtown where they remain today under various names including AT&T Wireless & BellSouth while Western Union vacated their building across I-10 just north thereof currently serving as an art museum known as “Western Union Museum”
