In the early 1800s, the area around West Sacramento was a sparsely populated region. However, with the arrival of waves of immigrants in search of new opportunities, gun slings began to proliferate. In 1851, a man named George Eastman started manufacturing pistols in what is now known as East Sacramento. Soon after, other entrepreneurs followed suit and gunslingers began traveling to South America and Europe to purchase firearms and ammunition. The popularity ofgun slings led to an increase in crime and violence in the area. Gunfights would break out between gunmen and law enforcement officers, leading to numerous fatalities. In 1882, a group of gunmen known as The Klansmen killed twenty-two people at an agricultural fairgrounds in West Sacramento. This event is considered one of the worst massacres in California history. Despite these challenges, gun rights continue to be contentious throughout California history. In 2017, bills were introduced into both houses of Congress attemptingto ban assault rifles within certain limits; however, these attempts have yet to gain traction outside of state legislatures
West Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River and borders Elk Grove to the south and east. It is bordered by Placer County to the north, Yolo County to the northwest and SR 99 to the southeast. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Sacramento were Spanish traders looking for trade routes into China. Juan Bautista de Anza founded Rancho San Francisco in 1827 on present-day North Main Street as part of his exploratory mission from Monterey Bay. He named it after Santiago del Oro, Mexico—his father's homeland—and its location on an old route leading from modern day Fresno through Redding and then upriver to Stockton made it convenient for trading with Native Americans living along both sides of the river. In 1847, James Wolkomir developed what would become known as Wolkomir Heights which became an important commercial center due to its location near water resources, timberlands, schools and other infrastructure needed for agricultural production during that time period. In 1875, two brothers named George Pemberton began developing land south of town on present-day Pemberton Boulevard. They renamed their land "West Sacramento" after they purchased it from Captain John Sutter who had sold them 5 square miles (12 km²) of territory around Amador Valley in 1864 following his victory over Genovese forces at Bear Butte Creek near modern-day Fillmore City.[1] The settlers were mainly Germans who arrived in large numbers during World War I because they could not find work opportunities in America; many decided to move westward because there were few opportunities available back East given President Woodrow Wilson's policies at that time that favored Eastern coastal industrialists over farmers across America.[2][3][4] The arrival of waves of refugees during World War II also contributed to increased population growth in West Sacramentans as many people sought safety and opportunity outside Great Britain and France during wartime shortageszonationed countries like Germany and Austria).[5] Today's downtown district was built largely between 1925 and 1940 as part of cost-cutting measures by then West Sacramento Mayor Harry Cuny post-World War II efforts aimed at saving money while redeveloping some older downtown structures into more efficient uses such as schools, libraries and medical facilities;[6][7][8] although progress has been slow due mainlyto lack of money Available since 1990s when original downtown redevelopment plan was shelved amid financial problems caused by high housing costs etc.. West Sacramento is the City of Sacramento, California. It is located in the East Bay region of Northern California. West Sacramento was founded on November 15, 1851 by pioneer George Stephenson and his brother-in-law John Sutter. The city was named for George Stephenson's farmstead on theoma Creek in what is now east Contra Costa County. The site of present-day West Sacramento was first settled in 1846 by pioneers from Sacandaga County. At that time, it was part of Rancho Cerritos Mexican land grant to Manuel Nieto and his brothers Fernando and Pedro Nieto. In 1847, the Rancho Cerritos lands were ceded to Jose Antonio Nazareno and Bartolomeu Alvira for their share in The Yountville earthquake disaster which struck San Francisco on April 16th, 1847. In 1861, when California became a state, a new town called Natomas (named after General Phillip Montgomery who commanded United States forces during the Mexican War) was established southeast of Sacramento by General James Shields and others associated with the American Civil War effort. On January 1st, 1865, Natomas merged with West Sacramento to form what would become known as "West Sacramento". The city experienced several setbacks during its early years but persevered throughout World War II as one of almost two dozen communities within the so-called "War Zone" - an area straddling Northern California that saw intense fighting between U.S., Japanese and German troops from 1939 through 1945. Afterward, West Sacramentans bounced back quickly with job creation programs downtown and suburban growth throughout Old Town Chinatown (the original center of west sacramentan life) bringing more people into 8 Mile Square than ever before while preserving much OFR architecture including most notably Painted Lady restaurants such as Joe's Pizza & Pasta or Rosebud Café until they closed around 1990s due to various economic difficulties brought about by dotcom crashes etcetera etcetera... Aftermath: Many businesses closed because there wasn't enough money available to keep them open; few people moved into west sacramentan neighborhoods because they felt safe; some cultural artifacts like old paintied lady restaurants closed; Local government struggled to keep up with residents' needs even as population growth led to increased infrastructure costs; crime rates gradually decreased until recent spike due largely to changes in social lighting/security measures
