West Sacramento, California was first settled in 1848 by the brothers Lorenzo and Josephine Forbath. The town was founded on the banks of the Sacramento River, about a mile from present-day downtown. The Forbath family had come from nearby Lodi. In 1850, Isaac Asimov and his brother Jacob moved to West Sacramento from their farmstead east of the river in what is now Elk Grove Village. The city's first school was built on First Street in 1851. In 1865, when gold was discovered in Northern California, settlers flocked to West Sacramento to seek riches. By 1870, business had boomed and a new courthouse and jail were constructed on Third Street near the river. Gold mining ended in 1874, but West Sacramento continued to grow prosperous through agriculture and other businesses until World War II when it lost its status as an agricultural center due to changes in industry. During the war, many people left for military service; some of them founded towns such as Livermore or Pleasanton (now San Jose). However, most of West Sacramento's residents sided with United States forces over Japan during World War II. Some shops reopened after the war while others closed altogether because of regulations put into place by the Selective Service System (SSS). The city of West Sacramento was founded by the American Explorers in 1847 as a trading post on the banks of the Sacramento River. The town quickly grew, and by 1861 it had become an independent city. In 1917, the United States acquired sections of California from Mexico and renamed it West Sacramento to reflect its new ownership. The city has since grown to encompass over 32 square miles (84 km2), making it one of the largest cities in Northern California. It is located on both sides of the river, with East Sacramento lying to the east and West Sacramento to the west.
